Subject: Written of Me

Text: Psalm 40:6-8

Intro: The Lord Jesus Christ after his resurrection used this term written to draw evidence that he was who he had proclaim from the beginning and what he proclaim about himself. He designates the location of where it is written..

Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These [are] the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and [in] the prophets, and [in] the psalms, concerning me.

A number of places in the writings of the of the Old Testament Jesus has reference to. Note what he says in Luke; the law of Moses, being the first five books of our english version, the prophets, meaning all who dared proclaim a day in which Christ would come, and in the Psalms, which we have before us this morning.

I would love to be able and I dont think I am, to preach on every verse in the bible that has reference to the LORD JESUS CHRIST. Since I cannot do that at least at the present I would like to expound time permitting on this, this morning...

I... THE INSUFFICIENCY OF MERE SACRIFICES... VS 6

Matthew Henry says: thou wouldst not have the Redeemer to offer them In the old testament the Priest had to offer something, it was not themselves for God did not require such to happen. They offered animal sacrifices. In the writings of Hebrews we have preached many sermons of lately concerning this it is said: Hebrews 8:3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore [it is] of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

These sacrifices are insufficient because:

(1.) Because sin did not enter into the world through them:

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:  I know that some teach it was through the serpent which is true, that is the serpent beguiled Eve and she gave it to her husband, but it was through man sin actual enter this world.

(2.) Because they could not satisfy God nor his demands:

Listen as I read what the Lord said concerning sacrifices and offerings in his condemnation of Israel in her backsliden condition.

Isaiah 1:11‑14 To what purpose [is] the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. 12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts? 13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; [it is] iniquity, even the solemn meeting. 14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear [them].

There are probably more but I must move on...

II.. IN THE VOLUME OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF MEN ...VS 7

The Psalmist introduces at this point the great hope of the people of God and sinners who have not yet come to know Christ.  In the volume of the book which at this time means the many writings of the Old there is sufficient evidence of the Lords anointed our savour. Here he declares the..

(1.) The coming: I come

It is written in such a way that it suggest that he had already come. In type he had, in prefiguring he had, in the many ways the Old testament loudly proclaims it. In the Hebrew this phrase is in the present tense which complies with the english, meaning that it was as good as he had already revealed himself.

The book of Job says:

Job 19:25 For I know [that] my redeemer liveth, and [that] he shall stand at the latter [day] upon the earth: The phrase does not say I know he is going to live, but I know he liveth.

The great plan of salvation was put into reality as yet before it came into reality. You and I can stand here this morning and say yes to this, because we have read the book. It clearly reveals Christ as the lamb that was slained before the foundation of the world.

Christ came to Adam and Eve and provided for them a covering whereby he might fellowship with them through the shedding of the innocent animal. He came to Noah and provided an Ark to deliver him and his family and certain animals from his wrath. He came to the children of Israel in the form of a sacrificial lamb to protect and bring them into the promise land. He came to you and I by being born of a virgin and living the life, and then going to the cross and dying for us.. He came to us in calling...

(2.) The definiteness of his coming clearly revealed: vs 8  Thy will

In this phrase is housed two important things:

 a. Christ delighted to do his fathers will...

This is seen through out his ministry that we have record of. Not one time will you find Christ publicly saying man this is to hard for me, he would not even open his mouth at certain occasions so he would not violate scripture.

Those who reticuled  Christ at the cross said this of him: Psalm 22:8 He trusted on the LORD [that] he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

b. Christ publically proclaim his delight:

Christ told the woman at the well these words: John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. He preaches it yet still: John 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

What was the will of the Father for his son:

1st. It was the will of the Father that Christ take on humanity:

Hebrews 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldst not, but a body hast thou prepared me: Here is a clear reference to the preparation of Christ coming into the world. He did not come as a angel, he did not come as a mere human, he came as the Son of man and the Son of God.

The preparation of the coming of Christ into the world as a man, began its long march in the garden of Eden, that is in time. He came as the seed of the woman, Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

2nd. It was the will of the Father that Christ come into this world in very lowly circumstances.

He did not come with pomp and great convenience of a palace. He did not come with warmth of a secure and private place of birth. He did not come with doctors and nurses at his mothers side attending her every pain. He came in a most mysterious way.

Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

3rd. It was the Fathers will that his son be born without public facilities:

Luke 2:6‑7 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Believe me there is no room in the hearts and minds of the vast majority of people today as it was back when this occurred.

4th. It was the will of the Father that Christ come into this world as a root out of dry ground.

Isaiah 53:1‑2 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, [there is] no beauty that we should desire him.

The same idea of his entrance was also used early in this great book: Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

Dry it may have been, but it is not dry now. Christ said and I believe with all my heart, John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

The root is the ugliest of the tree, it is that hidden foundation of the tree, it is where the real life is. Kill the root and you kill the tree, for it is the life of the tree. In that great book of Revelation it is said that Christ is: Revelation 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star.

5th. It was the will of the Father and Christ delighted to do it, that he die in the place of all his sinful people.

Never make not mistake about it, Christ delight did not mean he did not dread the judgement of God upon him for the sins of his people. This is seen in the tremendous battle he had at the garden seen. Listen as I read the description as Luke records it..

Never make the mistake that this was easy because Christ was God... it was not because he was in his humanity.

Luke 22:42‑46 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

He died that day on calvary never to die again, he died that day on calvary to live again, he died that day on calvary to secure the salvation of his people. He died that day to please his Father...

6th. It was the will of the Father that he live and be exalted in order that we might have a story to tell...

It is clear that his exaltation came by way of Mary, it came by his manhood, it came by his rejection, it came by him being demised, it came by him fulfilling the law, it came by him experiencing the judgement of the Father. It came by him pleasing the Father.

Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:  In the book of Luke 24:46‑48 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And ye are witnesses of these things.

I would close this morning with a word of the last phrase in our text thy law within my heart The completer knowledge of the will of his father was known early to Christ as a boy and he declared it to Mary... Luke 2:48‑49 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

For this purpose came I into the world he said to Pilate...
