July 14, 2002Subject: "Why I must Preach The Gospel"
Text: Galatians 1: 1-24
Intro: There is in my understanding a pressing need for the gospel to be preached in all services in our day. John the Baptist began his ministry by preaching the gospel.. the first chapter of the book of Mark...
The Lord Jesus Christ began his public preaching by preaching the gospel of the Kingdom which essentially the gospel of the grace of GOD...Mark 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
As I read and studied this passage I thought " Why do I preach the gospel, I know that it is needful and I know that in my ministry I have labored to preach Christ which is essentially the gospel. But why do I preach it... Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
Men preach the gospel sometimes to be heard and seen...
Men preach the gospel for money..and many more reasons..but my concern is why I must preach it...the answer is found in this text of the word of GOD... that is for me it is..and should be for all preachers who are present and that hear me by radio and tape:
I... " BECAUSE IT REMINDS ME OF WHAT CHRIST DID FOR ME AND ALL HIS PEOPLE:...VS 4
1st... Gave himself...
He gave all of himself, it took his entire being to save us, not just his shed blood...Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
2nd... For our sins:
There was a price that the Father demanded of him and he was willing to do it for us. There was a great exchange at calvary he gave himself and God Gave him our sins...
2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
3rd... That he might deliver us:
2 Corinthians 1:9-10 But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: 10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver [us];
When we consider what the LORD has delivered us from then you will understand why it is that it is imperative for me to preach the gospel I need to be reminded of what CHRIST HAS DONE FOR ME ALL THE TIME:
4th. This was all done according to the will of GOD:
If it is GOD’S will that you be saved you will. Jesus believed that and he preached that..John 6:38-40 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all
which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
II... " BECAUSE MEN ARE OFTEN REMOVED FROM THE TRUE GOSPEL...VS 6-9
How easy men forsake the truth for fame and fortune, or for the love of other things...
1st... The wonderment of it: " I marvel" vs 6
This disturbed the Apostle Paul... that these men who no doubt had the truth; was soon after remove themselves into another gospel.
The LORD JESUS CHRIST SAID: Luke 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
2nd. The means of their reverting back to a gospel of works: vs 7
Galatians 5:10-11 I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he
be. 11 And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.
Preaching the gospel in it’s purity always brings offense to the unbelievers..they hate it, they will water it down, they will distort it, they will pervert it, they will turn the grace of GOD into lasciviousness... I must preach the true gospel so that there will be true light in darkness...
IV... " BECAUSE IT KEEPS ME FROM PLEASING MEN"..VS 10
According to Jamison, Faucet, Brown they were accusing Paul of preaching out of both sides of his mouth, such as the time he had Timothy circumcised, yet persuading the gentiles to leave it alone.
This could have been so, but now Paul is saying I am committed to the LORD and him alone. Paul was not perfect, neither am I. Men are fallible, only GOD is infallible...
1st. With respect to the GOSPEL if we please men no matter who we are we displease the LORD...
Jesus said: Luke 6:26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
The Lord is not saying that you cannot have respect for the men of GOD, because if you cannot respect me, if I am not a blessing in preaching to you, then I am not your servant for JESUS SAKE.
But he is saying not to think of men more highly than the word of GOD allows..
2nd. With respect to the GOSPEL if we please men we cease to be a servant of the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
V... I MUST PREACH THE GOSPEL BECAUSE I AM COMMITTED TO IT: VS 11-12
The word " certify" in the earliest greek manuscripts it means to gain knowledge of, or to have a thorough knowledge of it... believe me Paul did.
1st. He was committed to a gospel not after men...vs 11
The word "after men" means that it was not according to men..man could never come up with the wonderful gospel of Chirst as we know it today...
2nd. He was committed to a gospel that he was not taught by man...vs 12
You can teach preachers to do many things, but you cannot teach a man to preach the gospel. He must have it in his heart. Note what he said...
"By the revelation of JESUS CHRIST"...the first four verse of the 15th chapter of Corinthians tells us clearly he received it ...and it was from the LORD.
I must say at this point that I am committed to the same gospel... and by the grace of GOD I plan never to put up the sword, to surrender the truth, to compromise the teachings of Christ on any subject... I have come to far to look back, to turn back, to put up the sword at this point in my life...
VI... " I MUST PREACH THE GOSPEL BECAUSE IT PLEASED GOD TO PUT ME INTO THE MINISTRY...VS 15-24
Paul said of himself:
1 Timothy 1:12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
Note what Paul said concerning himself once again..
2 Corinthians 3:5-7 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency [is] of God; 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 7 But if the ministration of death, written [and] engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which [glory] was to be done away:
Those words grab me... "able minsters" having the ability to preach the gospel of the grace of his son... there are plenty of men in the pulpit that are not able ministers of the gospel and what they preach declares it loud and clear...
1st. Able ministers are that way because the LORD makes them that way... "not ourselves"
2nd. Able ministers preach Christ...

VII... I PREACH THE GOSPEL BECAUSE IT GLORIFIES THE FATHER...VS 24
The coming of Christ glorified the Father, the life of Christ glorified the father, the preaching and the ministry of Christ glorified the father, the trial of Christ glorified the father, the death of Christ glorified the father, the burial of Christ glorified the father, the raising of Christ from the dead glorified the father. Never forget it my friends preaching the gospel glorifies GOD.
