Lesson- Introduction To The Book Of Isaiah

Text- Isaiah 1-1 The study of the book of Isaiah will encompass a number of things. I will be looking at the historical as well as the prophecies as they related to the nations of Israel and Judah. This book is definitely a book with many prophecies of the Lord Jesus Christ. Isaiah is quoted more than any other prophet in the Old Testament 65 times at least in NT. He specially mentioned by name 20 times. John the Baptist began his public ministry by quoting this great prophet.. Matthew 3:3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Jesus quotes him by saying these words. Matthew 15:7-9 [Ye] hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with [their] lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching [for] doctrines the commandments of men. Note This Important quote by Christ... John 12:38-41 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with [their] eyes, nor understand with [their] heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. 41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

Author & Date Isaiah, the son of Amoz, Whose name meant (The Lord Is Salvation) ministered in and around Jerusalem as a prophet to Judah during the reigns of 4 kings of Judah: Uzziah (called "Azariah" in 2 Kings), Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah (1:1), from ca. 739-686 B.C. He evidently came from a family of some rank, because he had easy access to the king (7:3) and intimacy with a priest (8:2). He was married and had two sons who bore symbolic names: "Shear-jashub" ("a remnant shall return," 7:3) and "Maher-shalal-hash-baz" ("hasting to the spoil, hurrying to the prey," 8:3). When called by God to prophesy, in the year of King Uzziah's death (ca. 739 B.C.), he responded with a cheerful readiness, though he knew from the beginning that his ministry would be one of fruitless warning and exhortation (6:9-13).

Recently I told you that this book could be broken into two main sections the first 39 chapters of this book deal with the JUDGMENT OF GOD then the next 40-66 deal with the promise of salvation and redemption. This is not to say that nothing in the first 39 chapters have anything to do with redemption for in several chapters we see the prophecy of Christ. It also deals with the future reign of Christ in the new heaven and the new earth with his people. In this book there is at least 16 major prophecies related to the LORD JESUS CHRIST. Briefly I want too list them and then when we come to them we will study them in detail.

1st. The Branch.. Isaiah 4:2 In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth [shall be] excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

2nd. The Virgin Birth.. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

3rd. The sanctuary. Isaiah 8:14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

4th. The child..Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

5th. The ministry of the Messiah.. Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

6th. The Ideal King.. Isaiah 16:5 And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.

7th. The Foundational Stone.. Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner [stone], a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

8th. The Reigning King.. Isaiah 32:1-2 Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment. 2 And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

9th. The Elect of God....Isaiah 42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, [in whom] my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

10th. The Success of the Lord Jesus Christ.. Isaiah 49:6-7 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. 7 Thus saith the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, [and] his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is faithful, [and] the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.

11th. The submissive servant.. Isaiah 50:5-6 The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. 6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

12th. The Suffering Servant.. Isaiah 52-13-15 thru Isaiah 53-1-12

13th. The Great Invitation of the Servant...Isaiah 55-1-5

14th. The Great preaching servant.. Isaiah 61-1-3

So you can see that this book is about Christ this book is about judgment and redemption and the glorious peace that comes from knowing the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour and soon coming King.. I want you as a listener to this study to read this book in it's entirety and each week I will try to let you know where we will be at each week and then you can study it.
