The Book of Isaiah
Text: Isaiah 55: 1-13
Intro: I would like to introduce this passage by talking about the “water criers”. These were men that would make public cries. They were often referred to as the forerunners of the nobles.
It was the morning call of the Temple watcher. Just about all the commentaries that I have read on this passage, Gill, Jamison, Fauset, Brown, Matthew Henry all agree that the Prophet sees a deeper need than just water and milk and wine, it is the spiritual cry for the people of GOD to come to the LORD and take his grace.
I... “ TO THE THIRSTED”...VS 1
It is an invitation with conditions, it is limited only to those who have a genuine spiritual need. Water in the bible has a great deal of spiritual significance.. Let us examine and see...
1st. The Lord Jesus Christ speaks of water being a satisfying element...
John 4:13‑14 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
2nd. He refers to water as the symbol of the Holy Spirit in us:
John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
II.... “ THIS INVITATION IS TRULY OF GRACE”...VS 1
Without money has reference to bankrupt sinners coming to the grace of GOD with nothing to offer, no money to purchase... herein is the wonderful grace of GOD being showered upon sinners in need...
Sinners are bankrupt...
Sinners are bankrupt because of their terrible bent toward sin...
Genesis 13:13 But the men of Sodom [were] wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly. This word exceedingly “means an abundance of sinful trait..
1 Timothy 1:9‑10 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstelalers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
It is to these that Christ gives grace to, only a sinner can be saved by grace, only sinners who are made to desire the wonderful grace of the Lord can taste and drink of that fountain without money and without price...
Listen to me tonight if you know you are a sinner, if you are thirsty, if you want the Lord I have good news for you...
1 Timothy 1:15 This [is] a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
III... “ THE UNACCEPTABLE” VS 2-3
Here is the simple but profound truth of the world, they are always trying one thing or another to satisfy and yet it never seems to be enough... Jesus said these wonderful words of truth...
Luke 9:25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
Earthly and temporal things will not suffice for the hereafter. Eternity is real and waits for all who hear me tonight...Just remember young people there is no gain in this world that will suffice for the eternal journey you will be taking one day..and the truth is you will never know when you are going to take this journey..
Note with the appeal of the Prophet...
1st. Eat that which is good: ..vs 3

1 Peter 3:12‑13 For the eyes of the Lord [are] over the righteous, and his ears [are open] unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord [is] against them that do evil. 13 And who [is] he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?
Partake of the good water, the good gospel, the good life, the good ground on which the good seed will bring forth fruit unto the LORD... hold to that which is good...
2nd. Let your soul delight itself in fatness:
This speaks of the wonders of the Christian life and the many things that the LORD bestows upon his people. Drink of it, eat of it, partake of it, it alone will be the great foundation of which you will never fall...
Jesus Said:
Matthew 7:24‑27 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
3rd.. Incline your ear ..vs 3
This my friends is an invitation to listen to what the voice of the LORD is saying. It is so easy to turn a deaf ear to the voice of the LORD when he is calling through his word to our hearts...don’t harden your hearts tonight if he is calling.
Hebrews 3:15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
a.. Note the invitation of where to come: “ come unto me”
Page # 4
Matthew 11:28‑30 Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.
b. When you come “hear”..vs 3
This is an appeal to your spiritual ear, that inward man that which Christ hath regenerated...
C. The gracious proposal on the part of the LORD: “ I will make an everlasting covenant”... sure mercies of David”..
What are these wonderful mercies of David upon Israel and upon all of us tonight who have headed the call of the LORD..
1. Saving knowledge: Jeremiah 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
2. The law of the LORD written in our hearts: Jeremiah 31:33 But this [shall be] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
3. Free pardon : latter part of verse 34 “ and I will remember their sin no more”
4. Reconciliation: 2 Corinthians 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
There are many more things but time will not in this sermon permit it...
