The Book of Isaiah

Subject: The Sin Bearing Servant

Text: Isaiah 52:13- 53-1-12

Intro: In the midst of destruction, captivity, fear, death, and hunger, the LORD promise the LORD JESUS CHRIST would come and settle the sin problem of his people.

I realize that those that heard this did not know what he was talking about unless he revealed it to them. Of course that is true today, millions lie in sin, in false religions, millions have a false hope serving a false god of some king.

But as we look back on this great fulfilled prophecy of our LORD may we glean precious truths that will enable us to be a better christian. It is clear in this text that the servant is our LORD and he is GOD’S only begotten son.

In these three verses of the 51st chapter and the entire 53rd chapter there are 10 prophecies that can be attributed to the LORD JESUS CHRIST. I will try not to rush through them but talk on all of them as time permits.

We have not in chronological order the work of Christ in these 3 verse and I want to take them in order they occurred...

I... “ THE HUMILIATION AND THE SUFFERING OF THE LORD: VS 14

This is not just his face, it was his whole body: No one ever suffered like the LORD did at the hands of wicked men...

1st. It was public  suffering:

Psa 22 7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, [saying], Psalm 22:8 He trusted on the LORD [that] he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

2nd. It was a humiliating suffering: “ Psalm 22:6‑7 But I [am] a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

3rd. It was a very painful human suffering: Psalm 22:14‑15 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

4th. It was an example for us when we suffer: 1 Peter 2:21‑23 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:

5th. It was a brave suffering: Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

John 19: 9-11

II... “ THE WORK OF CROSS: VS 15

JFB says of this verse

GESENIUS, for the antithesis to "be astonished, " translates, "shall cause ... to exult." But the word universally in the Old Testament means either to sprinkle with blood,  as the high priest makes an expiation  or with water,  to purify (Ezek 36:25; compare as to the Spirit, Ac 2:33), both appropriate to Messiah (John 13:8 Heb 9:13,14 10:22 12:24 1Pe 1:2).  It is the blood of Christ that I too believe is the reference in this verse:

1st. It is through the blood of Christ that we have communion: 1 Corinthians 10:16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

2nd. It is through the blood of Christ that we have real and a viable redemption and that draws us night unto GOD: Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

3rd It is through the blood of Christ that our dead conscience  is purified so we can serve the living GOD...

Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Why should we serve the LORD?

1. Because he is GOD:

2. Because he hath made us:

3. Because we are his sheep:

Psalm 100:3 Know ye that the LORD he [is] God: [it is] he [that] hath made us, and not we ourselves; [we are] his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4th. It is through his blood that we are eternally redeemed:

1 Peter 1:18‑20 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, [as] silver and gold, from your vain conversation [received] by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

III... THE EXALTING OF THE SAVIOUR: VS 13

Philippians 2:8‑11 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth; 11 And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

1st. Humility proceeds exalting: “ Humble himself”

All that Christ did, from coming into the world in the form of a man in the womb the association of himself with this sinners of this world, the great and terrible suffering he went through, the great rejections he experienced, and then finally the horrible and yet absolutely necessary death he died was for his exaltation.

2nd. It was high exalting:

Ephesians 1:20‑23 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set [him] at his own right hand in the heavenly [places], 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all [things] under his feet, and gave him [to be] the head over all [things] to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

3rd. It was an hourable exaltation... “ given him a name that was worthy of adoration and worship...

Revelation 5:12-14

Next we will pick up in chapter 53
