Sunday Night

Subject: “ BROKEN”

Text- Isaiah 51-17-23

Intro: As I read this sad commentary of the life of GOD’S elect I thought about what can I preach about, what is in this text that would benefit my listeners, is there a message in it for us here tonight?

The word that came to my mind, “ BROKEN” this seems most fitting for this occasion that Judah finds herself in. No the word broken is not in the text but believe me a close reading of this text you will see quickly that this is the case.

I... “ SIN WILL ALWAYS LEAD TO BEING BROKEN” VS 17

Note that Jerusalem is pictured as drunken, having drunk of the cup of the LORD’S chastening hand now she is fallen..she hath drunken of the cup of trembling...she is wrung out...

Why will sin break you? Why will sin break a nation? Why will sin break a church? The answers I give to these question is true for all three under consideration..note with me the following..

1st.. Sin is against our present good of body, soul, mind..

Proverbs 8:35‑36 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. 36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Look at the many examples that we have in the Bible and see what sin done to them and believe it will likewise reap the cup of GOD’S indignation upon us for when we play with sin it will come at last bite us...

Adam & Eve  in the paradise of GOD... driven out and not permitted to go back to the tree of life...sin is such a deceiver, sin is such a destroyer, sin is such a robber of the body, soul, and the mind...

Believe me young people you don’t want to pay the price for dabbling in sin just to see how it taste, feels, and to be popular with the in crowds...sin will get you in the end.

Genesis 3:16‑17 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire [shall be] to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. 17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed [is] the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat [of] it all the days of thy life;

II.... “ IN HER BROKENESS SHE IS STRIPPED  : VS 18

1ST... None to guide her:

When a man is drunken he is helpless, when one is overindulged in some sin to the point that it leaves them without a sense of direction...nobody wants to guide them.

Of the sons that Judah had born none was left to guide her...she lay in the street of her own doings, she lay without pride anymore, she was stripped by the hand of the LORD...

2nd... None to lift her up by the hand...

Isaiah 49:21 Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where [had] they [been]?

Psalm 142:4 I looked on [my] right hand, and beheld, but [there was] no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.

We can see why their sons was unable to guide and to help them... they were fallen likewise in the streets...VS 20 The great prophet Jeremiah said of the same people after preaching to them these words in his Lamentations...

Lamentations 2:11 Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.

They likewise was full of the fury of the LORD. When GOD is angered there is no hope he moves in judgement.

III... “ THE GREAT HOPE AND PROMISE TO THE PEOPLE OF GOD’..VS 21-23

1ST. There is great hope for any who have fallen...

The prodical son...Luke 15-11-24

If you are here tonight and you have been made to taste of the hand of GOD’S wrath on you, you need not despair for there is hope and redemption for you tonight for GOD is merciful to sinners who cry out unto him...

Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

2nd. The reason for hope: vs 21-23

a. Note to whom this promise is made: vs 21

They were not overcome with wine, but with the burden of their sin... they needed at this point to hear from the LORD and now they were hearing from him..are you listening tonight...

b. What he promises them...vs 22-23

1. That he would plead their cause...vs 22

Jeremiah 50:34 Their Redeemer [is] strong; the LORD of hosts [is] his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

The greatest of the men of GOD realize their need for GOD to plead for them... Psalm 43:1 Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.

Micah said: Micah 7:9 I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, [and] I shall behold his righteousness.

2nd. They had suffered enough ...vs 22

The LORD had taken his cup from their hand and now promised to put it into the hand of her captures...what they done to the people of GOD even though they were instrument in his hand now they would pay for it...

Once again Babylon will drink of the cup of GOD’S wrath one day... Revelation 18-1-8

If you are here tonight and feel that you have been drunken with sin and GOD had brought his hand upon you if you will but in sincerity repent and confess you sins he will bring you back into the fold with a loving hand...
