The Book of Isaiah

Subject: “ The Role of The Lord Jesus Christ”

Text: Isaiah 50: 4-9

Intro: The prophet Isaiah is once again given a role of prophesying the blessed work of the Lord Jesus Christ for his people... Various commentators share light on this passage:

Both John Gill and Matthew Henry believe this to be primarily speaking of the LORD JESUS Christ... Jamison, Faucet, Brown say basically the same thing.. The context of the remainder of the verses through verse 9 show clearly that Isaiah speaks of one greater than himself and that one is the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

In these verses we see some things that the Father hath given to the son as a man so that he could preform all his duties as the true Messiah of his people... Look at the verses with me...

I... “ THE TONGUE OF THE LEARNED”..VS 5

The question that might arise in your mind at this point could Christ learn anything? I think so, let us look at a verse with me  to show that..

Hebrews 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; Note that his suffering proceeded his learning.

Like any servant of the LORD we must likewise be given the tongue of the Learned in order that we might speak the words of the LORD to his people...Moses when called of God said he could not speak and listen to what the Lord said to him.

Exodus 4:10‑12 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I [am] not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I [am] slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.  11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?  12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.

II... “ THE PURPOSE FOR WHICH HE GAVE HIM THE TONGUE OF THE LEARNED:

1ST.. “That he might know how to speak”

Page # 2

I believe every preacher of the word of GOD needs to know how to speak. He must study and prepare in order for the LORD to use his mouth.. Let us turn to the of Jeremiah 1: 4-10 You can clearly see that GOD is the one who puts his word in our heart and mind so that they will come out of our mouth...

The Lord Jesus said:

John 8:26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.

Once again verifying the fact that the Father had taught him note what he said...

John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

Now if the perfect impeccable Lord needed to learn and then be given the words to speak then how much more do we need to study and learn and be sure that we are speaking what the LORD said...

2nd. That he know how to speak in season:

Jamison and faucet and brown say that the word literally means:"to succor by words, " namely, in their season of need..

3rd.  Those whom he will speak this word of the LORD.... “ to the weary”

The hymn writer said it like this: Are ye weary, Are yea heavy hearted, tell it to Jesus tell it to Jesus...The Father bids up come to him, the Son bids us to come to him, the Holy Spirit convicts us to come, the church cry’s out come, the preacher pleads with you to come...

4th..  He awakes him to the hearing of it morning by morning... vs 4

III.... “ THE MORE SPECIFIC PROPHECIES OF CHRIST OUR LORD: VS 5-9

1st. The opening of his ear...

This shows the great humility of Christ and his willingness to obey his Father in all things...

The Psalmist David spoke a messianic Psalm...Psalm 40:6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

In the garden...Matthew 26:39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou [wilt].

Philippians 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

2nd. The submitting of himself to the wickedness of men..vs 6

a. Gave his back: whipped him

Note what he says; “I Gave” they did not take it, he could have stopped any of them that would not have been a problem but he saw a bigger picture than himself he saw you and I and he was doing it for you and I...

Matthew 27:26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered [him] to be crucified.

b. Gave his cheeks and face: Plucked his beared.. & spit in his face..

Matthew 26:67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote [him] with the palms of their hands,

III... “ THE FAITH OF CHRIST”...VS 7-9

The only time that Christ felt that the Father had no help for him was in the hour of his sacrifice for us.. All other times he felt the help of his Father.. Note what the verse says...

1. The Lord will help: very positive statement..

2. His determination: set his face like a flint...

Luke 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

He knew the will of the Father and he would not and could not allow anyone, anything to delay him or stop him...so he moved step by step toward his destiny.

3. His perception of the Father: “ He is near that justifieth me” vs 8

My margin bible says: “literally the master of my judgement” Do not misunderstand what this means, it does not mean justifying him from sin, but justifying him before men..every charge that was brought against him did not stand... even in the gentile court of Pilate he said I find no fault in him..

John 12:28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, [saying], I have both glorified [it], and will glorify [it] again.

4. His confirmation... vs 9

The destiny of men... “they shall wax old as a garment” all the men that turned on Christ no longer exist they are dead... they have faced him in reality at his throne... and they were sent to hell..to await final judgement as did the fallen angels who kept not their first estate...
