The Book of Isaiah

Subject: The Glory of Jehovah

Text: Isaiah 42:8-9

Intro: I would like to introduce this text tonight with the following considerations.

1st. The name of God: “ I am the LORD” vs 8

From Genesis 15 when God called Abraham to the 3rd chapter of Malachi where God announced his immutability; the phrase and the proper name of GOD is seen 116 times.

a. Jacob in his dream of a ladder reaching to heaven said these words:

Genesis 28:12‑13 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. 13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I [am] the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

b. Moses heard the voice of god and he said these words:

Exdous 6:1-3

c. Speaks to Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 9:23‑24     Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise [man] glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty [man] glory in his might, let not the rich [man] glory in his riches: 24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I [am] the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these [things] I delight, saith the LORD.

2nd. My Glory will I not give to another: vs 8

a. The personal claim of God: “My glory”

b. The absolute of God: “will not give to another”

Glory: means the honour, the splendor, the dignity, the reverence, the abundance of the Lord:

This brings me to my subject for the evening:

I... “ THE GLORY OF THE LORD IS EXIBTED IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST:

(1.) It is seen in Paul’s writings..

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to [give] the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

He that hath seen me hath seen the father: I and my Father are one: these are the wonderful facts of Christ.

(2.) Written to the Hebrews:

Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

II... “ GOD’S GLORY IS ASCRIBED TO HIM AS ETERNAL:

Galatians 1:4‑5 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: 5 To whom [be] glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Remember the meaning of the word Glory: it is the honour, the splendour, dignity, reverence and the abundance of God.

III... “ THE GLORY OF THE LORD SHOULD PROVOKE FEAR IN US:

Deuteronomy 28:58 If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;

There is no fear of GOD any more no fear of his name, his name is cursed, abused, maligned, and a thousand other things. No respect for his word and certainly not many believe it, bits and pices yes but not the fundamental truths of it.

Chorus on NBC made of male singing a XMAS carol about the birth of Christ and when they finished the announcer thanked the Gay mens choir that is what I am talking about.

IV... “ GOD’S GLORY IS SEEN IN HIS MAJESTY:

David said:

Psalm 93:1 The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, [wherewith] he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

Psalm 104:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.

V... SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GLORY OF THE LORD:

(1.) It is great glory:

Psalm 138:5 Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the LORD: for great [is] the glory of the LORD.

(2.) It is rich glory:

Ephesians 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

(3.) It is exalted glory:

Psalm 8:1  A Psalm of David. O LORD our Lord, how excellent [is] thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

Psalm 113:4 The LORD [is] high above all nations, [and] his glory above the heavens.

(4.) It is communicable glory:

a. To Moses: Exodus 34:5‑7 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. 6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear [the guilty]; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth [generation].

(5.) It is desirable:

Psalm 63:2 To see thy power and thy glory, so [as] I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

Psalm 90:16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.
