The Book of Isaiah
Text- Isaiah 33-1-24
Intro- The historical background of this chapter is found in the book 2 Kings 18-13- through 19-37 This has to do with the Assyrian invasion, the history of this serves as a foundation to this chapter and I will briefly give it to you.
Senacherib leveed against Hezekiah a tax and then received it and then he demanded an unconditional surrender of the city of Jerusalem. He captured many cities and broke down trave.
Hezekiah’s ambassadors came home weeping , then Senacherib sent as army against Jerusalem to enforce his demands but his army failed to get the keys to the city.
Then God steps in on the seen...
2 Kings 19-35-37 Turn
I... “THE WOE”...VS 1
It is clear to me through out my study of the Bible that God often warns his enemies before he brings judgement on them.. We seen that in Noah day, we seen it in this book of Isaiah often... In fact from chapter 18 through this present study we have seen the Lord warn these invaders of his people...spoke of their impending judgement..
It is like that even in our day God warns through the word of the Lord and through his preachers that judgement is coming and no one takes it to heart...Psalm 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, [and] all the nations that forget God.
II... “THE PRAYER OF ISAIAH”..VS 2-9
In his prayer we will note a number of things...
1st. His plea to the Lord... “Be gracious to us”..vs 6
Isaiah 30:18 And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD [is] a God of judgment: blessed [are] all they that wait for him.

The Lord is gracious unto us...we must be willing to see it and acknowledge it to him...
Exodus 33:19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
2nd. His ground upon which his request is made... “WE have waited for thee”.
Through out the Bible it promises fruit to those that wait on the Lord..David filled his Psalms with these verses...
Psalm 37:9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
Psalm 123:2 Behold, as the eyes of servants [look] unto the hand of their masters, [and] as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes [wait] upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.
Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew [their] strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; [and] they shall walk, and not faint.
3rd. A personal request...
a. Be their arm...this speaks of the strength of the Lord...
Isaiah 40:10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong [hand], and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward [is] with him, and his work before him.
Luke 1:50‑51 And his mercy [is] on them that fear him from generation to generation. 51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

b. Salvation in the time of trouble..
There is no question to the fact that every time we are delivered from some event in our life it is the Lord that does it, when we see our family delivered it is the Lord that does it...
Psalm 68:19 Blessed [be] the Lord, [who] daily loadeth us [with benefits, even] the God of our salvation. Selah.
III... “ THE PROCLAMATION OF ISAIAH”...VS 3-9
1st. The results of the Lord lifting up himself..vs 3-4
When God moves in judgement he has no mercy, take the flood it really happened, he opened the widows of heaven, take Sodom and Gomorrah he really rained down fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed it... Take Pharaoh and his army felt the mighty hand of the Lord in Judgement when he rose up.
2nd. The Lord is exalted... vs 5
Psalm 97:9 For thou, LORD, [art] high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.
This speaks of his Sovereignty and the fact that there is none above him, he is the highly exalted one, none above him, none can supersede him, none can overthrow him, none can find him out.. He is GOD..the eternal one, the holy one, the loving one, the wrathful one, the glorious one... He is without question the one that deserves all honor and praise. It is he who refuses the give his praise or his glory to another...
3rd. The futility of the armies of men and the power of man...vs 7-9
a. The futility of the valiant ones.. They cry
b. The futility of the ambassadors.. The fail in their peace..
c. The futility of getting away... Highways lie in waste...
d. The futility of the earth itself..vs 9
