Series- The Book of Isaiah

Subject- “ Until The Spirit Be Poured Upon Us”

Text- Isaiah 32-9-20

Intro- In this passage we see both the judgement of God upon the women of Judah who are at ease in Zion, we also the warning that God gives through the prophet Isaiah, then we see the wonderful promise he makes to the remnant... It is so easy when things are going well to relax to become complacent in our work for the Lord.

Amos 6:1     Woe to them [that are] at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, [which are] named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

The spirit of slumber is so evident in our day, in our churches, in our land, in our homes... The Lord Jesus said in one of his parables these words..Matthew 13:25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

The Apostle Paul said in his letter to the Romans..Romans 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now [it is] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed.

I... THE APPEAL OF THE PROPHET...VS 9-14

1. The Appeal... “ Rise up”..vs 9

Both Mother and daughter at ease in their surroundings, living high, not to concern with their spiritual condition are what the preacher is saying...

2. The clear prophecy...vs 10-11

Trouble is coming, the ancient Job said in his writings man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble... Job 14.1

2 Chronicles 29:8 Wherefore the wrath of the LORD was upon Judah and Jerusalem, and he hath delivered them to trouble, to astonishment, and to hissing, as ye see with your eyes.

3. The clear message of what will happen...vs 12-13

Lament means to wail and morn...In the end of the world the great babylon whore will be judged by the Lord Jesus Christ and this is what they will do...

Revelation 18:9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,

4. Why they lament?..vs 14

II... THE GREAT PROMISE GOD MAKES...VS 15 “ the work of the Spirit”

There is such a difference in the people of God when the Holy Spirit is poured out in an unusual way...Until God moves there is no work, until he favors us again we will be at ease in Zion.

1. Judgement proceeds the pouring out of the Spirit upon them and us.

The Apostle Peter said in his message 2000 years ago this very truth judgment must begin first...

1 Peter 4:17 For the time [is come] that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if [it] first [begin] at us, what shall the end [be] of them that obey not the gospel of God?

There is no question that we need a work of God among us that we need a revival in our day, we need one in our church in our homes. If we see God move again in our homes it will be a move of God in our churches because our churches are made up of our homes...

2. The results of the Spirit being poured out...

a. Righteousness..

Page # 3

Righteousness is not imputed here in this text but rather righteous works, when the Holy Spirit moves on us we will work for the Lord we will be busy, we will care again, we will say here am I Lord send me.

Job can describe it for us better..

Job 29:13‑16 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. 14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment [was] as a robe and a diadem. 15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet [was] I to the lame. 16 I [was] a father to the poor: and the cause [which] I knew not I searched out.

b. That righteousness works peace...vs 17

Romans 2:9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

Romans 2:10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

c. This peace works its way into their homes...vs 18

It secures their dwellings, nothing like it and all this is possible because of the work of the Spirit upon them and upon us...oh that God would turn us so that we can turn, that he would rend the heavens again and come upon us in a mighty way, oh that he would show forth his mercy and save sinners again in a mighty way...

Psalm 85:5‑6 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations? 6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?

Psalm 138:7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.
