Sunday Night

The Book of Isaiah

Subject- The Humbling Effects of Judgement

Text- Isaiah 24-6-15

Intro- Last Sunday night we looked at the truth of this passage as it related to fall of the Empire that Babylon had built. This is the summation of all the prophecy that Isaiah had foretold would come to pass against the inhabitants of the earth then..

From Chapter 13- 23 you have the details of each of this nations that existed under the rule of Babylon. There was Assyria, Moab, Damascus, Ethiopia, Egypt, the there was Tyre and the Phoenicians, now the whole of it all.

One of the things that I pointed out to show that this does not embrace the future of another day was found in the construction of the tenses of the verbs...vs number 5 “ the earth is defiled” not going to be defiled, it already was.

Another strong argument for the case is also found in the 6th verse were once again it is in the present tense not future... note the statements... “therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, not going to but already did..once again “are desolate” “are burned” and the result of this is also found in the verse.... “few men left.

I.... “IT EFFECTS THE CONSUMPTION OF THEIR WINE ...VS 7-9

Joel 1:10‑12 The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. 11 Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished. 12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, [even] all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.

If you take away from a nation or an individual that which brings him most pleasure when it is gone, or there is lack of interest for it the results will be languish..which means it becomes a burden that of a heavy one.

Sin after a while becomes a bitter pill to swallow, it never will end the way it starts, it will shame and bring one into pure misery...no matter how it started. If you and I could have seen this in reality we would appreciate more of what the text is saying..

Proverbs 20:1 Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Even in our society today men believe that drinking solves their problems, and yet it does not solve it complicates it. It will get them in the end as it did in our text.

II... “IT EFFECTED THEIR FEAST”...VS 10-12

Human nature loves a crowd and they love to part so to speak. They like wine dancing and all that goes with it. Note so now God has put an end to it..

1. This is so even with the people of God...

The Golden calve..

Exodus 32:6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

2. It is double so with the lost...

Luke 12:19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, [and] be merry.

Look at what the verses say, the city is now the city of confusion, the houses are shut up, there is a crying in the streets for the joy they once had with the wine. The mirth of the land is gone, the city is left desolate..

Jeremiah The Great prophet of God ask the question...Jeremiah 50:23 How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!

Jeremiah 50:24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD.

Note one nation can withstand the judgement of God when it is this thorough and believe me it has happen over and over again in this world...listen to what another prophet said...Zephaniah 2:15 This [is] the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I [am], and [there is] none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, [and] wag his hand.

This is true when the Lord will in his judgment rain down again upon the revived Babylon empire..look at Revelation 18-16-17

III... “THE GRACIOUSNESS OF GOD UPON THE REMNANT OF JUDAH AND JERUSALEM...VS 13-14

This gleaning of the elect is a joyous occasion..this is the hand of the Lord to recover his people that are left of the captivity...

Isaiah 27:12‑13 And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the LORD shall beat off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel. 13 And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.

1st. They shall cry unto the Lord... “vs 14"

WE like the ancient people of God are told many time sthat if would but cry he will hear us and come to our rescue...but not until he desires to do so...

Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

David said...Psalm 34:6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard [him], and saved him out of all his troubles.

2nd. They sung of the majesty of the Lord...vs “14"

Solomon proclaimed...

1 Chronicles 29:11 Thine, O LORD, [is] the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all [that is] in the heaven and in the earth [is thine]; thine [is] the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

Psalm 29:4 The voice of the LORD [is] powerful; the voice of the LORD [is] full of majesty.

3rd. A tradmendous responsibility...  “vs 15"

a. Glorify the Lord in the fires...

Whenever we are in the fires we should always remember what the Lord hath promised....he said in the Isaiah 43-1-3 let us turn there and read it.

Psalm 22:23 Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.

Psalm 50:15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

No matter what kind of fire we are in, we are bound to glorify the Lord in it and it will bring him honor and will do us good...
