Sunday Night
The Book of Isaiah
Subject- “ Fastened As a Nail”
Text- Isaiah 22-15-25
Intro- It not my intention to give full detail’s to ever verse in this text but rather give high lights of it. We closed our last lesson with the sure overthrow of Judah for the sins of some of the people that was left who tried to secure themselves a hiding place without the help of the Lord.
We open this lesson tonight with the downfall once again of a man and the raising up of another man. It opens with the prophecy of Isaiah declaring his source for the prophecy. “THUS SAITH THE LORD...vs 15
It makes little difference what Isaiah says, or any other if it is not what God said, wether it is me, or someone else. Paul spoke by the Holy spirit and said these words...Romans 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
According to what I can read about this man Shebna He was the head of an party that favored an alliance between Judah and Egypt. He was like a prime minister, and was over the treasurer, and the chief advisor to the King.
He like most men in high authority like to leave themselves a name, so he began to secure property and hewed himself a sepulcher close where Kings where buried. The Kings were buried from the top down depending on how they ruled, so this man Hugh’s him out one in a high place hoping to buried among the Kings...vs 16
I.... HE WILL BE VIOLENTLY BROUGHT DOWN...VS 17-19
This judgement that God will hurl upon him speaks to all of us not to think ourselves to be something that we are not, to walk over others thinking to take advantage of it to secure ourselves a place maybe where we don’t belong.
1. The irresistibleness of Gods judgement... “The LORD will carry thee”
It was the Lord that carried away Judah into captivity for their sins...1 Chronicles 6:15 And Jehozadak went [into captivity], when the LORD carried away Judah and Jerusalem by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.
2. Note how he will carry him away... “thrown thee like a ball”..vs 18
Page # 2
If a ball is thrown with precision it can reach a target, but just as sure as you throw a ball the ball will go in the direction it is thrown. He will violently throw him into a large country. What this implies that he will not be buried where he intended so that he will have a name among the dead Kings, I will throw him so far he will a nameless man dead and buried in a unknown grave.
II... “THE PROMISE OF THE LORD”...VS 20-25
The Lord always has his way, his will of purpose will triumph over whom he hath purposed it, in this case he raises up a servant, but just not a servant, but a man that shall type the Lord Jesus Christ in a number of aspects.
1. Eliakim...vs 20
If you would read II Kings 18 & 19 you will see some more information about this man, how he succeeded Shebna and was spokesman for King Hezekiah during the invasion of SENNACHERIB. Note what God says about this man.
A. His claim upon him... “I will call my servant”...vs 20
B. His provision for him.. “ I will clothe him” ..vs 21
C. His power and dominion... “ I will commit”...vs 21
D. His authority.... “ I will lay upon his shoulder” ..vs 22
E. His surety ... “ I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place..vs 23
F. His respect “They will hang upon him” ..vs 24
III.... “HOW IS ALL THIS A TYPE OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST” ?
1ST. Christ is no doubt called “MY SERVANT”
Isaiah 42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, [in whom] my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
Necessarily so a servant must be a number of things...to be a real servant.
A. He must be obedient to his master...Christ was to his Father.
B. He must be loyal to his master...Christ never betrayed his fathers will.
John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
2nd. He is a type in that the government was committed to him so to Christ was committed the government..
Page # 3
We know this from other studies in the Bible concerning the Messiahship of the Lord Jesus Christ
Isaiah 9:6‑7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Christ is all this and more, by divine decree.. Psalm 2 read and then we come to crowning of it in the resurrection, Christ lays claim to it and announcers it to his church... Matt 28:16-20 ..
3rd. He is a type in that as he had the key of David so did Christ ... “ the key of David”..vs 22
Revelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
David’s house is a spiritual house, David’s throne is a Spiritual throne, and Christ is on it as we speak tonight governing his kingdom.
Acts 2:29-32
4th. He is a type in that he would fasten him as a nail in a sure place..vs 23
Christ is the sure one fastened by God that cannot be removed. Not like this man to the fullest for we will see he was removed, but Christ abideth forever. The surety by which he is fastened is the basis for the security that you and I have and enjoy. Hebrews 7:22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.
Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner [stone], a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
Hebrews 6:19‑20 Which [hope] we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; 20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, [even] Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
I don’t have time to deal with the next two verses so we will look at them next Sunday evening.
