The Book of Isaiah
Subject- “Isaiah’s First Mission”
Text- Isaiah 7-1-16
Intro- Uzziah was dead, Ahaz is lifted to his fathers throne and as it was in many of the ancient vacated thrones, when a new King was seated someone gets the idea of overthrowing them, and the means of overthrowing them is war...
It is clear that God moved these two Kings against Ahaz for a purpose, if you remember we studied this attempt in the Kings...2 Kings 15:37 In those days the LORD began to send against Judah Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah.
2 Kings 16-1-5
Ahaz was a Bejamite of the family of Saul...He was the Son of Jotham as stated in the text. He also was in the linage of the Lord Jesus Christ...Matthew 1:9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;
Proverbs 21:1 The king's heart [is] in the hand of the LORD, [as] the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.
I....THE HOUSE OF DAVID...VS 2
Even though Judah has been infested with idolatry and had forsaken the Lord his covenant with the house of David was the security of King Ahaz...the remnant of Gods seed was in Judah and also the Lord Jesus Christ.
Psalm 89:30‑34 If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; 31 If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; 32 Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. 33 Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. 34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
News had been given that Syria and Israel had merged and was coming after Judah this brought about fear in his heart...Sin has a way of causing men to fear when they are faced with death and destruction and Ahaz and his kingdom stood at the brink of destructions as far as he understood.
They that is the nation under his leadership had forsaken the covenant, distorted the law of God, tasted the wiles of the Devil, overthrew the worship of the Lord their God and now they are faced with enemies...The Lord promised...

Leviticus 26:36 And upon them that are left [alive] of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.
II.... THE INSTRUCTIONS GOD GIVES ISAIAH..VS 3-9
1ST.. Meet him where he is... The upper pool...
Perhaps he was there trying to figure out a way to keep his enemies from diverting his water supplies for themselves..or planning some new thing to help him and his fallen kingdom. It is not wise for us when we are faced with enemies to trust in our own counsel, but we should confess our sins and trust in the Lord...
Psalm 73:28 But [it is] good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.
Psalm 118:8‑9 [It is] better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. 9 [It is] better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.
2nd. What to tell him...vs 4 “Take Heed”
To take heed and be quiet means to be watchful and tranquil. And also he instructs him in two more areas...
A. Fear not...
Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
B. Don’t be fainthearted...Not be weak...
Psalm 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
3rd. What he promises..vs 7-9 It shall not come to pass...
He needed to take heed to what Isaiah was preaching to him, these were words of great hope and security for him and for his nation..Isaiah says to Ahaz these men and Kings are but a noise and they will not hurt, cannot hurt thee.

Psalm 33:10‑12 The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. 11 The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. 12 Blessed [is] the nation whose God [is] the LORD; [and] the people [whom] he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
These two nations shall not exist in 65 yrs they will become nothing...what a promise he makes to this King...vs 8-9 It is no doubt in my mind based on the text that he does not believe Isaiah..
1. Isaiah says ask God for a sign...vs 11
We have been taught to believe whatever God says that it is true, and it will come to pass as he has stated, so was Ahaz, but he could not believe what Isaiah was stating.
Hebrews 6:17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed [it] by an oath: Hebrews 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which [it was] impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
2. Ahaz refuses...vs 12
3. The response of Isaiah..vs 13-16
Ye have wearied the Lord...vs 13
Malachi 2:17 Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied [him]? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil [is] good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where [is] the God of judgment?
Here is the sign therefore that the Lord will give you...here is the gospel to you, here is the promise of the Messiah...listen and this nation listen...vs 14-16
a. His miraculous birth... “Virgin born”
b. His divine name “Immanuel”
As you and I both know herein lies the real hope of Judah and Israel, nothing else will save them but Christ the messiah. Thus years later Christ is born of virgin as this great man of God had foretold hundreds of years before it came to pass...
Next we will study the Virgin birth and the remainder of this chapter...
