The Book of Isaiah

Subject- Gods Judgement of His Vineyard

Text- Isaiah 5-5-7

Intro- In our last lesson we seen that God gave this parable concerning the vineyard to declare his intentions concerning Israel and Judah. Whatever these two nations were the Lord made them so. This is true even with you and I.

He dug them up out of nothing and then provided for them, sheltered them, and made his presence know among them. In the last lesson we saw that the Lord posses a question ¼in ver 4 no matter what he did it was never enough.

David refers in one of his Psalms the following¼.

Psalm 78:13‑15 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap. 14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. 15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave [them] drink as [out of] the great depths.

So you can see how good God was to them. In our lesson tonight we see the judgement of God upon them...In this judgement we see a number of things...

I... THE DIVINE RIGHT OF GOD VS- 5

1.) This divine right is seen in his ownership of them... my vineyard

Sometimes it is difficult for people to see that God can do as he pleases good are bad to whoever he pleases. The reason is ownership.

Isaiah 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou [art] our father; we [are] the clay, and thou our potter; and we all [are] the work of thy hand.

Jeremiah 18:6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay [is] in the potter's hand, so [are] ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

2.) This divine right is also seen also in his word to them.

God had given many promises to Israel and not many of them was unconditional, in fact I dont know of any of them being unconditional.

II... WHAT IT IS HE DOES TO THEM VS 5-6

1st. He takes away their hedge...vs 5

A hedge was something that was built up around a vineyard...Jesus gave a parable himself about a hedge ...A hedge would be similar to a fence. It was put there to keep two thing from coming together.

Mark 12:1 And he began to speak unto them by parables. A [certain] man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about [it], and digged [a place for] the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.

The results of God taking away the hedge is seen also in the text....it shall be eaten up. You can take this is a spiritual consumption of these two nations...

Jeremiah 10:25 Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.

In the warnings of the Lord concerning the Devil he says that Satan desires to consume us.

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

We too can be eaten up by allowing the world int o our hearts and believe me it will eat us alive and consume us until there is no spiritual life left in us. The Christian life is indeed a battle, it is a constant struggle.

2nd. Break down the wall...vs 5

Once the hedge is gone then the wall, which removes all protection of the vineyard, which opens it up to all who pass. That once beautiful garden, that once flourishing nation is now reduce to a mere ground up field of nothing.

Jeremiah 45:4 Thus shalt thou say unto him, The LORD saith thus; Behold, [that] which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up, even this whole land.

3rd. He will lay it waste...vs 6

Once the hand of God has done this it is no turning back. He declares it shall not be pruned, briers shall come up, no rain upon it, it will baron.

1 Kings 14:15 For the LORD shall smite Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves, provoking the LORD to anger.

The Lord clearly identify who this is that he is talking about and what he was looking for out of them. In verse 7

Lessons we can learn....

1st. Learn well that if we are the elect of God, if we are the church of Jesus Christ we belong to the Lord.

Psalm 100:3 Know ye that the LORD he [is] God: [it is] he [that] hath made us, and not we ourselves; [we are] his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

2nd. Learn well that since we are his people then we owe him the loyalty that is due his holy and righteous name.

Matthew 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Luke 9:23 And he said to [them] all, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

3rd. Learn well that since we are his people, the sheep of his pasture, since we are his church, that we must not be eaten up by the world and all that is in it.

1 John 2:15‑17 Love not the world, neither the things [that are] in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

4th. Learn well that since we are his people his church if we do not do what he has commanded us to do he will deal with us, as individuals and then as a church.Luke 12:47‑48 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not [himself], neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many [stripes].But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few [stripes]. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
