The Book of Isaiah

 

Subject- “The Branch of The Lord”

 

Text- Isaiah 4-2-6

 

Intro- This prophecy of this great man of God is given in the midst of the aftermath of war and devastation. It promotes hope, it provides provision, it shows a kindness of God in the midst of sin crushed city.

 

Seven times he uses this phrase IN THAT DAY in the first 4 chapters of this book. A careful study of this text will show that the day at least in this text is referring to the Lord Jesus Christ first coming into this world.

 

Isaiah was not the only Prophet that spoke of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ as a BRANCH  Jeremiah did also...

 

Jeremiah 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

 

I..... “CHRIST IS THAT BRANCH OF THIS TEXT”...VS 2

 

Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

 

Zechariah 6:12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name [is] The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:

 

Zechariah 6:13 Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

 

In the origin of a branch it is the tender part of the beginning of life. He comes from Jesse, that he would do two things from these verses....

 

1.) Build the temple of the Lord... ( Did Christ do that?) Yes he did!

 

He claimed and rightly so to be greater than any earthly Temple...Matthew 12:6 But I say unto you, That in this place is [one] greater than the temple.

 

We are that Temple he was to be build...

1 Corinthians 3:16‑17 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which [temple] ye are.

 

Ephesians 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

 

2.) Sit and rule upon his thrown and be King and Priest at the same time...

 

Zechariah 6:13 Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both

 

 

II.... “THERE IS A PEOPLE OF THE TEXT ALSO...VS 3 “ Every one that is written”

 

It is clear to me that these that are written are the ones that Christ was going to redeem and they were to become HOLY unto the Lord...

 

1st. They are written in heaven.

 

Luke 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

 

2nd. It is called the book of the Lamb.

 

Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

 

3rd. When they were written...

 

Revelation 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

 

III..... “ THE WORK OF THE BRANCH FOR THOSE PEOPLE”...VS 4-6

 

1st. His work was to be a washing...

 

Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

a. It is a complete washing...

 

1 Corinthians 6:9‑11 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

 

b. It is a washing away..a sending away of our sins... “ note the language of the test” Have washed away...vs 4

 

Daughters of Zion being the people of the Lord in Zion, the elect of God, his beloved ones. He washed away our sins...In fact Paul said that very thing...that is we are children of Jerusalem...Galatians 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

 

2nd.. That this washing would bring about a provision of direction./

 

Now if you take this to mean some physical reality you have not taken time to study the wonderful truth that is conveyed in this O.T. prophecy.

 

He uses the O.T. example of the pillar of cloud by day and the fire by night..which indeed is the Christ of his church he leads us...

 

A. Christ leads his churches through the wilderness of this world through the pillar of the word.

 

Psalm 119:105. Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

 

There was only one cloud, there is only one word of God, it is his holy word that we have before us tonight....It is the sole director of our faith, it is sole regulator of our walk, it is the sole standard for our worship, and we must obey it rather than man.

 

B. Christ leads his churches through the Holy Spirit...

 

The Holy Baptized the church on Pentecost, filled its members, convicts, convinces, draws, seals, sustains, magnifies, covers, protects, leads, comforts, teaches the people of God the churches of the living God.

 

C. Christ leads by his great providence...Christ is supreme in heaven and no less than that on earth...he has the authority in heaven and on this earth..

3rd. The washing would bring about a wonderful dwelling place for the people of God...Christ the Tabernacle...vs 6

 

a. He is the true tabernacle...

 

Hebrews 8:2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

 

b. He is that perfect tabernacle.

 

Hebrews 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

 

Colossians 3:3‑4 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, [who is] our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
