The Book of Hebrews

Sunday Night

Subject: “The Sufficient Sacrifice”

Text: Hebrews 10: 1-18

Intro: Unlike the Hebrews we are blessed to have a more clearer understanding of the work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross for our sins as well as the sins of the whole of the elect of GOD.

We are confident that many Christian professed do not have the same assurance as you and I based upon their religious practices... It is a blessed thing to be able to have truth revealed to us.

It is clear that the law was a shadow...verse 1. In the old covenant there were many shadows which were not the real thing. Barnes says “ That is, the whole of the Mosaic economy was a shadow; for so the word law is often used. The word shadow here refers to a rough outline of anything, a mere sketch, such as a carpenter draws with a piece of chalk, or such as an artist delineates when he is about to make a picture. He sketches an outline of the object which he designs to draw, which has some resemblance to it, but is not "the very image;" for it is not yet complete”.

It is likewise clear that the shadow was inefficient with regard to actual completing anything... verse 1-11

The inefficiency of these shadows is seen for a number of reasons in these verses..

A.) Could not make a sinner perfect..vs1

b.) Could not clear the conscience from sins..vs 2

c.) Because it was repeated over and over..vs 3

d.) Could not take away sin..vs 4

e.) Because God had not pleasure in them..vs 6-8

f.) Because it was a temporary thing..vs 9

g.) Because no matter if it is offered many times and it was it was inefficient..vs 11

Not so with Christ Jesus our Lord and saviour.. our text and even this whole book establish the intrinsic worth of his one time sacrifice...other words that could be used is the value of it, the spender of it, the worth of it, the victory of it.. Words fail me to describe such a sacrifice..

“ THE SUFFICIENT SACRIFICE OF CHRIST”

The word sufficient means adequate, not lacking in any way. This is the saviour of the Bible. I want us to look and examine why Christ as opposed to the shadows of the old is a sufficient sacrifice.

I... “ BECAUSE IT WAS A ONE TIME OFFERING”...

In this book alone it is said that Christ did once and that in a short period of time what all the years of sacrifices of the OLD could never do no matter often it was done.

Hebrews 9:12 “Christ entered once into the holy place”

Hebrews 9:28 “Christ bear the sins of many once”

Hebrews 10:10 “ Christ sanctified once for all”

1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

II.. “ BECAUSE OF IT’S DURATION”...VS 12

Note that it was not a goat, or a bull, or a sheep, but it was a man, it was GOD who came in the flesh to sacrifice himself on the cross for you and I.

The proof of it.. He sat down..

Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

What Christ did it is forever..

Our sins forgiven forever, he has given us eternal life, he has caused us to drink of that fountain of living water that shall never run out. He has filled our hearts with an satisfaction in him that no one or nothing could ever do.

Psalm 22:26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.

Psalm 36:8 They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.

III... “BECAUSE IT PERFECTS US AND SANCTIFIES US FOREVER”..VS 14

God has so designed this sacrifice of Christ to be perfect and make the comers perfect that it is stagger to the human mind. No perfect in this flesh but in our souls...

Revelation 1:5‑6 And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, 6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

1st. Our sanctification is by The Father..Jude 1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, [and] called:

2st. Our sanctification is in Christ Jesus: 1 Corinthians 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called [to be] saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

3nd. It likewise is a work of the Holy Spirit...1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

4th. The word of God sanctifies us...John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

It should be understood that there is a progression in our sanctification. It therefore could be said... that we are  positionally sanctified, (this is in the work of Christ) that we are progressing in our sanctification ( this is the work of the word and Holy Spirit, then there is the ultimate ( which is glorification) in the resurrection.

IV.. “ BECAUSE IT SATISFIED THE FATHER”...15-18

I have used these quotes quite often...

At his baptism Christ is said to have pleased the father... Matt 3-17 This is my son in whom I am well pleased. At the mount of transfiguration it is said by the father this is my beloved son in whom I am well please hear ye him. What testimony...

1st. It is seen in his father teaching him: John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

2nd. It is seen in the Father honoring him: John 8:54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:

3rd. It is seen in the love he has for Jesus Christ: John 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

Everything that Christ did satisfied his Father. His life, His virtue, His sinlessness, His obedience, His power, His grace, His love for his people, His promoting the Father...all of it declared that he was well please with his son our Saviour. Colossians 1:19 For it pleased [the Father] that in him should all fulness dwell;

Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

One of the most profound statements in the Bible is found in the prophecy of Isaiah...It was written in that beloved chapter of sacrifice by this old testament man of GOD.. listen to it.

Isaiah 53:10‑11 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put [him] to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see [his] seed, he shall prolong [his] days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, [and] shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

The awfulness yet necessary work of Christ on the cross is beyond me tonight. It goes right to the heart of the matter...it forever takes care of the sin problem.

It releases into our souls that which is desperately needed to make us fit for heaven. Do you know this Christ of Calvary tonight if not why not?
