Sunday night
Subject: “ Christ the Fulfillment of The New Covenant”
Text: Heb 9:6-28
Intro: I do believe that you should understand the real purpose behind the book of Hebrews by now. It was to clear up all matters of doctrine and practice among the Hebrew Christians.
It was and is the test by which one finds out the truth about the Old and the New. It is the superiorship of Christ to all that has gone before him. The writer using the terms better...
In this lesson tonight we continue to see the glory of Christ over the Old tabernacle and it’s furnishings.
I.. “ THE SERVICE”..VS 6-10
Keep in mind...
1.That it was a service of God:
2.That it was ordained of God:
The service he speaks of was the daily burnt offerings by the priesthood, the many functions that God had instructed them to do. This perhaps speaks of the every present Christ before the Lord on behalf of his people.
3. The high priest went once a year into the holy of holiest.. Vs 7
This is were sin was typified being atoned for in the once a year sacrifice. Notice he did it for himself and for the people. The protection that was needed for the High Priest was “blood”.
This tells me that the way to GOD has always been by and through the sacrifice of blood. This is why Christ had to shed his blood on the cross, the big difference being that Christ needed no sacrifice of blood for himself, but for us.
4. The Spirit’s witness..vs 8-10 The way into heaven as MH states was not so clear as it is now to us. The old testament sacrifice on the day of the atonement could never remove the guilt, the stain, the great defilement brought about the fall of Adam in the garden and passed on to us his seed.

This word “reformation” means to straighten thoroughly. This is what only Chirst could do and did do. This is what Paul or whoever wrote this great book is stressing in his preaching.
III.. “ CHRIST THE FULFILLMENT”..VS 11-28
If I may I would like to basically highlight in this portion of the sermon what Christ did and not deal with each verse since it is a repeated to most things that we have already discussed.
(1.) Christ in fulfilling the tabernacle he obtain eternal redemption for all his people.. vs 11-12
For him to obtain eternal redemption he had to be a redeemer. Isaiah declared and prophesied many years before Christ came that he would do exactly that..
Isaiah 59:20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.
The word “redemption” is a word used to describe a ransoming.. The act of buying back from another what is yours. Christ did exactly that he ransomed us...
Matthew 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
(2.) Christ fulfilling the tabernacle his work would purge our dead conscience ..vs 14
The offering of the old covenant would mainly deal with purging the outward defilement, this is why they had washings and purifying of old the external things...
Barnes says “ That is, cleanse, purify, or sanctify your conscience. The idea is, that this offering would take away whatever rendered the conscience defiled or sinful”.
David prayed: Psalm 79:9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.

Note also that God did this for a purpose.. That we might cease from dead works in order that we might serve the living God.. Dead faith and dead works go hand and hand.
1. In serving the living God there is no room for dual service...
Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
2. In serving the living God there is a following of him:
John 12:26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will [my] Father honour.
3. In serving the living God there is a great deliverance that has taken place so we can serve...
Romans 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not [in] the oldness of the letter.
4. In serving the living God there is a divorcing oneself from idolatry and idol gods...
1 Thessalonians 1:9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
5. In serving the living God we do it in his kingdom...
Hebrews 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
(3.) Christ fulfilling the tabernacle he is the mediator of the new testament.
Page # 4
1 Timothy 2:5 For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
One who intervenes between two, either in order to make or restore peace and friendship, or form a compact, or for ratifying a covenant a medium of communication, arbitrator..
All of these Christ is..and more...Hebrews 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
Hebrews 12:24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than [that of] Abel.
The closet thing to a mediator in the old testament would be when Job said: Job 9:33 Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, [that] might lay his hand upon us both.
Job didn’t have one, but we do, and his name is Jesus. What a peace maker he was, what covenant of grace he has established, what great hope he has laid in our hearts, what joy we have in him as a mediator.
(1.) As the mediator he appears in the presence of God for us: vs 24
Explaining his reason for leaving the broken hearted disciples Jesus said John 16:10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
John 20:17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and [to] my God, and your God.
Remember what he said:
Romans 8:34 Who [is] he that condemneth? [It is] Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
(2.) As the mediator he had to pay the price to the receive the position..vs 26
Page # 5
What a price he paid.. Sacrificed himself for us. What love he has so demonstrated for us. He has laid down his life that he might take it up to be the mediator for us. He is seated now in the heavens ruling over his great creation and kingdom. He is ruling over the kingdoms of this world likewise.
(3.) As our mediator we will one day see him for he shall appear again...vs 27-28
Note that the ones that he bear their sins, are the ones that look for him, and when he comes he will come without our sin, with reference to our salvation. We are told in other scriptures...
Jesus Said: I will come again: John 14:1-2
Paul said we are look for that blessed hope: Titus 2-13
John said : We shall be like him: I John 3:1-2
Paul said:
Philippians 3:20‑21 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
