Sunday Night
The Book of Hebrews
Subject: “ Christ The Fulfillment of The Old Tabernacle”
Text : Hebrews 9:1-5
Intro: Last Sunday evening I concluded that the new covenant and all it’s blessings were not only for the Jews but was for us likewise. One of the things that I did not cover and will introduce what will probably be a series from the test of Chapter nine.
Barnes says and I agree: This is a general truth which would be undisputed, and which Paul applies to the ease under consideration. An old house, or garment; an ancient tree; an aged man—‑all have indications that they are soon to disappear. They cannot be expected to remain long. The very fact of their growing old Is an indication that they will soon be gone. So Paul says it was with the dispensation that was represented as old. It had symptoms of decay. It had lost the rigor which it had when it was fresh and new; it had every mark of an antiquated and a declining system; and it had been expressly declared that a new and more perfect dispensation was to be given to the world. Paul concluded, therefore, that the Jewish system must soon disappear.
The Lord Jesus Christ said and I certainly believe: Matthew 9:16‑17 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.
Then in our next chapter, we see, the three things that are important to understanding what I have preached for the last few weeks. 1.) The Type 2.) The Service 3.) The Anti-type fulfills the type. Without going into total detail of these types for each of them could be a sermon. I would like to just deal with briefly.

I... “ THE TYPE: VS 1-5
It is clear right at the start, that the old has it’s origin from the Lord. Note what it says, “Divine Service”. This service was render in a worldly tabernacle.. The Lord told Moses these words: Exodus 25:8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.
1st. The Golden Candlestick: vs 2
This particular part of the Tabernacle was made from one solid peace of gold, it was fashioned by hand and never changed it’s solidarity. This candlestick was a type of Christ and his people being one. This can stand also for the Lord and his local church.
John saw seven golden candlesticks, each of them made by the LORD and he was walking in the midst of them.
Revelation 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.
2nd. The table of Shewbread: vs 2
This I believe speaks of divine fellowship. David said in his famous 23rd Psalm 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
In the Lord’s supper it is called the table of the Lord: 1 Corinthians 10:21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
The size, and the materials, and the border of this table all speak of something. Measurements speaks of limitations. The table is large enough to receive all who come and not big enough for those who want come. The materials of this table was consistent with all other material in the tabernacle. It was made of Shittim wood and overlaid with pure gold.

a. The wood tells of the humanity of Christ:
b. The gold tells of his deity:
c. The Shewbread:
So you have both the humanity and the deity of Christ together. The provision of Christ as our bread of life. The priest fed off this table of bread. Some have suggested that the loaves because of the way they were made, speaks of Christ the written and the living word for his people to feed on.
John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
3rd. The Holiest of All: vs 3
This particular place was reserved for only the High Priest...vs 7 the reason being because he would represent the only one that speak for the people. He was the mediator and would represent Christ.
This is where the ark of the covenant was. Let me briefly say a few words about the ark. First, It was hung upon four pillars. These pillars were made of shittim word and overlaid with gold. This my friends is the foundation of the believers...
Secondly, The silver sockets stands for the redemption of the sinners. Thirdly, the Golden fillets above veil and the door into the holiest of holies, stands for the divine hand of GOD upon his son our saviour. Fourthly, the Veil itself stood for Christ’s flesh. Hebrews 10:20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; Fifthly, The golden fillets above the veil and the door remind us of the divine hand of the father upon his Son’s ministry while on earth. Sixthly, the golden pot of manna.
We briefly spoke this morning of this and so let me say a few more words about this manna which stood for the Lord Jesus Christ also. Just remember that Christ is,
a. A sufficient portion– There was enough for all
b. A suitable portion- It suited both young and old alike.
Page # 4
c. Satisfying portion- No man ever went hungry.
d. Strengthening portion.. It made them strong enough work and fight in the desert
e. Sustaining portion- They went on the strength of it forty years.
E. Sure portion.. It never failed..
This is all true of Christ... he is all-sufficient, He suit all cases, all nationalities, all ages, yea even all sinners without distinction. He strengthens us for service. Paul said be strong in the power of the Lord.
Seventh, Aaron’s rod that budded.. This particular symbol typed the priesthood...and thereby typifying the Lord’s priesthood today. Three things can be seen in this..
1. Buds– the symbol of life
2. Blossoms- the token of beauty.
3. Almonds- The token of the fruitfulness of life.
Eighthly, The tables of the covenant. Which is the law.
When we speak of the law we speak of the three section of the law. 1.) The Moral law.. The ten commandments. 2.) The Civil law. Which controlled the nations life.. 3.) The Ceremonial law. This ordered the religious life of the people.
What purpose was the law?
1. It reveals sin.. Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law [is] the knowledge of sin.
2. It cannot justify us: Gal 2:16
3. It leads sinners to Christ: Gal 3: 24-25
Galatians 3:24‑25 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster [to bring us] unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
4. It was made weak through the flesh:
Page # 5
Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
5. It was fulfilled by Chirst..
Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Ninthly, The cherubims and the mercy seat. This is were GOD shows mercy. The law condemns us, the blood covers us on the mercy seat which is Christ and condemnation is removed.
Luke 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as [his] eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
