The Book of Hebrews

Subject: ‘THE POWERFUL WORD OF GOD"

TEXT: HEB 4-12-13

Intro: This without a doubt is the greatest treasurer you have in your home. It is the living letter of God to his people. It has been preserved by God for all eternity. Many ungodly men have tried in their futile attempts to distort it, to destroy it, to make light of it, to belittle it, to cast doubt as to it’s validity.

Atheist try ever day of their life to remove it from our society and in some cases they succeed... It is the only record that we have that reveals to us the GOD who wrote, the saviour who redeemed us, the heaven we are going to, the faith that we need, the life we are to live... GOD’S word no doubt is all that it claims of itself...

It is that which is settle in heaven: Psalm 119:89 LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

It is that which gives us light: Psalm 119:105 NUN. Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

It is that which he has magnified above his name: Psalm 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

I... " THAT IT IS HIS WORD"... " THE WORD OF GOD"...VS 12

Samuel was speaking to Saul note what he said: 1 Samuel 9:27 [And] as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.

When we speak of the word of GOD there is three things we need to be reminded of:

1^st. There is the spoken word:

In the 1^st book of the Bible the first chapter eight times it is recorded that GOD actually spoke...

Vs 3— Let there be light

Vs 6— Let there be a firmament

Vs 9, 11, vs 14, 20, 24, 26.

2^nd. There is the written word of God:

Translation does not take away from inspiration so long as it is translated correctly. The word of God has been handed down into many languages since it was given in written form.

3^rd. The living word of God: Christ is the word...

John 1:1 " In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. That living word came down from heaven and became a man..

II... " THAT IT IS LIVING AND ACTIVE ...VS 12

The Lord Jesus Christ said this of his word: John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life.

1^st. It is so living and active that it will accomplish what God intends for it to do:

We have no doubt as to it’s powerfulness and it’s ability to do as God says that it will... The great Prophet Isaiah said this of the word of God, not the word of men but of God.

Isaiah 55:10-11 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper [in the thing] whereto I sent it.

2^nd. It is so living and active that it will bring us forth:

Peter said: 1 Peter 1:22-23 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, [see that ye] love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

3^rd. It is so active and so living that it is effectual in our hearts:

4^th. It is so active and so living that it builds up those who hide it their hearts:

Paul in his final remarks to the Ephesian Elders said... Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

It is that which keeps us from sinning against the Lord in our hearts..it edifies us to the fullest, don’t let it collect dust on some table in your house

III... " IT REVEALS THE CONTENT OF OUR HEARTS TO US" VS 12

It cuts, it discerns, the heart. The word of God is often referred to as instruments of power...

1^st. It is called the sword of the Spirit ... Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

2^nd. It is called a hammer: Jeremiah 23:29 [Is] not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer [that] breaketh the rock in pieces?

I would like to just list in order the things that his word is said to be able to do and I will use the longest chapter in the Bible to show and share it with you...I have given you this before but you learn by repeating what you have learned or heard..

A. It cleans our heart: Psalm 119:9

b. It keeps us from sinning: Psa 119:11

c. It quickens us: Psa 119:25

d. It will strengthen us: Psa 119:28

e. It will establish us: Psa 119:38

f. It will deliver us: Psa 119:41

g. It will give us answers: Psa 119:42

h. It will comfort us: Psa 119-50

I. It is the basis of our mercy: Psa 119: 58

J. It is that which God deals with us by: Psa 119: 65

K. It is that which gives us hope: Psa 119:74

l. It is the basis of any hope: Psa 119:81

m. It is a lamp and light for our feet: Psa 119:105

n. It is that which upholds us: Psa 119:116

o. It is that which orders our steps: Psa 119: 133

p. It is gives the reader of it joy: Psa 119: 161

q. It gives understanding: Psa 119: 169

r. It brings deliverance: Psa 119:170

Now do you see why the word of God is so important in your life, it will do all of this and more.. We must take time to make it part of our daily life. We must study it, love it, hide it in our hearts, trust it, believe it, live by it till we are called to face the author of it.

1^st. The power of God is seen in the fact that he can see all things:
