The Book of Hebrews

Sermon # 2

Subject: "The Position of Christ"

Text: Hebrews 1:3-

Intro: Make no mistake tonight that Hebrews in all the subjects that it covers "CHRIST IS THE CENTER OF IT". It is so clear when we look at how the writer begins his opening remarks about Christ.

Last Sunday we seen how God previously spoke in time past and now clearly says he has spoken to us now by his SON our Lord Jesus Christ.. The eternal God now takes his profound stance as to how he rewards his son our Lord for the great work of redemption he hath done.

I... " THE POSITION OF CHRIST AN APPOINTED ONE"...VS 2

It is clear that the Father speaks only by his son and that it is proper because of this great appointed position.. Appointed him Heir...of all things. This is the position of our saviour..

This is what the Father promised the Son...Psalms 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

Christ is the only begotten Son of God, in the high and incommunicable sense of possessing equality with the Father in nature. By virtue of this his sonship, God has made him heir of all that he possesses, that is, of the universe, and constituted him the sovereign Lord and Ruler of all things.

1st. It is claimed after his resurrection: Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

2nd. It is preached during his public ministry: John 16:15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.

3rd. Taught by the Apostles: COL:16-17 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

II... " THIS GREAT AND GLORIOUS POSITION WAS NOT WITHOUT A PRICE ON THE PART OF THE SON: VS 3

Barnes says: " This verse is designed to state the dignity and exalted rank of the Son of God, and is exceedingly important with reference to a correct view of the Redeemer"..

1st. The Son expresses the character of his Father:

a. When he was born: John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

B. When he was preaching: John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

C. Declared by Paul: 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

2nd. The Son’s power to sustain all things: "upholding all things" vs 3

Again in Paul’s letter to the Colossians 1:17 " He is before all things, and by all things consist...

3rd. The Son’s price: vs 3

Two things in this statement is worthy of our undivided attention as it before us tonight...

(1.) His great work of redemption... "by himself purged our sins" This my friends is profound to say the least.. The word purge..

Matt 1:21 " the mission of Christ to save us from our sins..

Matt 9:2 " Forgiven us our sins"

Matt 26:28 "He hath remitted our sins.

Romans 4:7 " He has covered our sins..

Romans 11:27 " He hath taken away our sins"

1 Cor 15:3 " He has died for our sins"

1 Pet 2:24 " He bare our sins in his own body"

1 Pet 3:18 " He suffered for our sins"

I John 4:10 " He is the propitiation for our sins"

Rev 1:5 " He washed us from our sins"

(2.) He sat down..

JFB said: This sitting of the Son at God’s fight hand was by the act of the Father it is never used of His pre-existing state co-equal with the Father, but always of His exalted state as Son of man after His sufferings, and as Mediator for man in the presence of God a relation towards God and us about to come to an end when its object has been accomplished.

Some of the verses that are connected with this sheds light on the greatness of the saviour exalted position... The command of the Father to the son...Psalm 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Ephesians 1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set [him] at his own right hand in the heavenly [places],

III. " HIS POSITION IS CLEARLY SEEN IN HIS WONDERFUL NAME: VS 4

The great Prophet Isaiah said in his prophecy concerning the Lord Jesus Christ these wonderful words: Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

1st. His name is an excellent name because of his character... "Better than angels"

2nd. His name is an excellent name by right: " By inheritance"

3rd. His name is an excellent name by order of the Father:

Philippians 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth; 11 And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father.IV... " THE POSITION OF THE ONLY SON OF GOD"...VS 5-6

1st. This position is acknowledged by the Father: Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou [art] my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

Note that wonderful relationship that he has with his Father. Through out the word of God Christ constantly was the affection of his Father..Seen in his baptism, Seen in his Transfiguration... Seen in that he gave him this position..

2nd. This worship of the Son...vs 6

V. THE POSITION OF GOD LIKEWISE IS SEEN IN OUR TEXT: VS 8-12

He declares several main things:

1st. That he is GOD...vs 8

2st. That Christ hath a throne...vs 8

3nd. That his ruling staff was one of righteousness...vs 8

4th. That God (JESUS CHRIST) loves righteousness and hates sin...vs 9

Psalm 33:5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.

5th. That he hath created this earth and all things in it...vs 10

Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

6th. The contrast between the Son of God and the Creation...vs 11-12

7th. The Confirmation establish... vs 14
