Sunday Evening
The Book of Hebrews
Subject: " An Anchor of The Soul"
Text: Hebrews 6: 10-20
Intro: My main thoughts to night will taken from verses 18-20 but I must say a few words about the other verses that we have read. There is that wonderful promise in verse 10 were he declares that God does not forget our labour of love:
All that we do for Christ must be out of Love... Paul said in I Corinthians 13 that though he spoke with the tongue of men and angels and had not love it would profit nothing...
We are to give in love, worship in love, go in love, bring in love, preach the truth in love, or we too will become sounding braze and tinkling symbols. Then in verse 11-12 an admonishment... Then in verse 13-17 the example he uses... Abraham’s faithfulness.
Then we come to our subject for this evening... An anchor of the soul. This is an interesting metaphor that he uses. An "ANCHOR is a stay, something that causes a ship to remain in a dock.
I do believe it to be none other than our Lord Jesus Christ. This is proven by the text itself. He says in verse 20 that Jesus has entered into that within the veil... When we look at the characteristics of an anchor then we can see why he would use such to describe our Lord Jesus Christ by.
I... "CHRIST IS THAT SURE ANCHOR"...VS 20
The writer makes use of this term sure to give peace and assurance to the believing Saints of God.
2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
1st. Christ is that sure anchor because God cannot lie: vs 18
Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
2nd. Christ is that sure anchor of the soul because of the great ability of Christ to secure us: "strong consolation" vs 18
Here the word "consolation" means comfort, in storms of life that beat against our ship of life. Christ is there for us. He is at every move of life, every storm of life, every detail of life. Christ love us as we seen this morning.
Psalm 71:16 I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, [even] of thine only.
David once again proclaims: Psalm 28:7 The LORD [is] my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.
3rd. Christ is a sure anchor because he is a steadfast anchor: vs 19
His steadfastness is forever: Daniel 6:26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he [is] the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion [shall be even] unto the end.
This word " steadfast" means enduring. That my friends is the nature of the LORD he can do nothing else but endure on behalf of his people and all that he that he hath promised.
4th. Christ is sure and stedfast anchor of the soul because he is a qualified High Priest...
He according to this text has entered into the veil. In order for him to enter into the veil some things were absolutely necessary, just like the old testament high priest must be prepared to go into the holy of holies Christ must be prepared for his entrance.
(1.) He had to have an unchangeable priesthood: Heb 7:24
(2.) He had to be able to do it: Heb 7:25
(3.) He had have the attribute of etenality.. Heb &;25
(4.) He had to be able to save: Heb 7:25
(5.) He Had to make intercession: Heb 7:25
(6.) He had to become us: Heb 7:26
(7.) He had to be impeccable.. Heb 7"26
(8.) He had to be able to not offer a sacrifice for himself: Heb 7:27
(9.) He had to be able to do this once: Heb 7:27
(10.) He had to be consecrated for all eternity: Heb 7:28
Whatever your case is tonight, whatever your lot in life is, whatever your problems are tonight, whatever your need is tonight CHRIST IS THAT SURE ANCHOR of the soul.
You can count on him when you cannot count on anyone else, you can come to him whenever you cannot come to anyone else, you can trust in him whenever you cannot trust anyone else. Christ is that sure Anchor of the soul.
II... " AS THE ANCHOR OF OUR SOUL HE IS OUR HOPE"..VS 19
Through out the bible he is referred to as our hope. It is through him we have this hope... 1 Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, [which is] our hope;
Paul later said: Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known what [is] the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
Not a maybe so hope but a real and expecting hope is our Lord Jesus Christ no one like him...he is without question tonight our living hope, he is our lasting hope, he is our enduring hope, he is eternal hope. Without him we would be lost forever without any hope.
He is our hope for tonight, for tomorrow if there is a tomorrow Christ is the hope of it.... look to him tonight for there is no where else to go for this great anchor of our soul.
III... " WHO HAVE FLED"
The word "fled" means to run to go toward. To go away from in some cases like the disciples Mark 14:50 And they all forsook him, and fled. Christ is not your anchor, nor is he your refuge tonight if you do not flee to him. If you remain your sins, if you as a Christian refuse to avail yourself of this great anchor you need not claim him tonight either.
1st. Those who flee to Christ are aware of great danger:
It is like the man who killed someone unawares and because of the cities of refuge he could flee there for safety from those who would kill him because of what he had done...
Numbers 35:11 Then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares.
You my friends are in danger tonight who have not fled to Christ: The LORD JESUS CHRIST SAID: John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
2nd. Those who flee to Christ are keenly aware of their need of a covering:
They are naked and undone before the LORD and they feel a drastic need to be covered be the garments of salvation.
Like Adam and Eve: Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh [himself] with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth [herself] with her jewels.
3rd. Those who flee to Christ for refuge and an anchor of the soul realize the great need of having their life secure.
Oh that you may be able to see tonight your great need of this, that the Holy Spirit would strip you of all your pride, religion, idea’s of goodness, and a thousand other things that sinners put up.
The Lord Jesus Christ is that great physician Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard [it], he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
The Him writer said: Come every soul by sin oppressed there is mercy with Lord, for he will surely give you rest by trusting in his word. Only Trust him only trust him only trust him now he will save you he will save you he will save you now.
