Series: “Christ the Sum & Substance of The Bible”

Sermon # 99

Subject:The Surety of a Better Covenant”

Text: Heb 7:22-28

Intro: In the book of Hebrews there is no question that Jesus Christ is presented as been far more superior than any or all things as it pertains to the old covenant. Just check out how many thing Paul says he is better than. I do not I know need to prove anything to you about the title of the text this morning, but rather need to reassure you of our Christ and his greatness...

The word “surety” means the guarantee of it. The covenant that he is speaking of is the “everlasting one”. It is this covenant that is under consideration. Later on in this book this covenant is called: Heb 13:20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

When someone becomes surety it means that they guarantee the success of the covenant, they put up everything for it. A person signs a note for someone, you become the guarantor of that note to the lending institution. Christ is the one for us. Not Moses, not Aaron, not the many high priest, but none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. He is above all, over all, and he took our place in order to show that clearly for his people.

I.. THE CONTRAST MADE BETWEEN THE OLD AND THE NEW: VS 22-23

It is clear that the reason this covenant and the one guaranteeing it was better, is because the many priest over the other could not continue because they died. Notice what Paul says, our Lord has an unchangeable priesthood:

(1.) Because God is unchangeable.

The Lord said to Malachi, Mal 3-6 “ I am god and I change not, therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed...

James said: Jas 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

(2.) Because he ever lives:

Verse twenty five says “he ever liveth to make intercession” What an assurance we have in Christ being alive and never going to die. Re 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Heb 7:16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

II... “HIS ABILITY TO SAVE”..VS 25

We must be reminded over and over again, that Christ main purpose in coming into the world was to save sinner. This is taught through out the bible.

(1.) He was born to save: Matt 1-21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

(2.) He was born lived and died and rose again that he might save: Mt 18:11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

Sinners are lost in their sins, they are lost from the Father, they are lost in their religion, they are lost to the gutters of this world. Christ is the saviour Paul said, Jesus said, Peter said, all his followers say.....he is the saviour.

(3.) He is the only saviour: Ac 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

This verse says he will save you to the uttermost: To endless regions of eternity, no end to it. That is a long time to be saved. Note the text says that he is the means to GOD..”come unto God by him”

Not by anything else, anyone else, any other covenant or works producing salvation. Christ is it.. Look at two verses:

2Ti 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, Tit 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

III.. “ THE CHARACTER OF THE SAVIOUR ..VS 26-28

(1.) His purity: “ holy”

Lu 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

(2.) His Harmlessness “innocent or not guilt or liable for.

Juda and Pilate said:

Mt 27:4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.

Mt 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

(3) Undefiled: not defiled, unsoiled free from that by which the nature of a thing is deformed and debased, or its force and vigour impaired.

What clarity this word brings to the Lord, nothing in him to make him unfit, soiled, etc. He could not and did not spoil.

(4.) His sanctification: separate from sinners..

This does not mean that he separated himself from sinners in a physical sense but in his character. He was not spoiled nor enticed by them, even though he was around them. Lu 15:2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

Barnes says:

Though he mingled with them, yet it was merely to do them good; and in all his life there was an entire separation from the feelings, principles, and views of a sinful world

(5.) His was exalted far above all: “made higher than the heavens”

I like how Adam Clark stated this:

He was holy, infinitely so; and merciful, witness his shedding his blood for the sins of mankind. Harmless—perfectly without sin in his humanity, as well as his divinity. Undefiled—contracted no sinful infirmity in consequence of his dwelling among men. Separate from sinners—absolutely unblamable in the whole of his conduct, so that he could challenge the most inveterate of his enemies with, Which of you convicteth me of sin? Who of you can show in my conduct the slightest deviation from truth and righteousness! Higher than the heavens—more exalted than all the angels of God, than all created beings, whether thrones, dominions, principalities, or powers, because all these were created by him and for him, and derive their continued subsistence from his infinite energy.

Can you come to such a Chris this morning... not will you but can you. If you can then come to Christ fall on him today...be saved right now if you can.

Conclusion:

Lessons:

1. You are complete in him therefore don’t go to others: Col 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

2. You have ever blessing that God intends for you to have in Christ: Eph 1-3 ¶ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

3. You will one day live with him forever: John 1-3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
