Series: “Christ Is The Sum & Substance of The Bible”

Sermon # 97

Subject: In The Days of His Flesh”

Text: Heb 5:7-9

Intro: Our days presents a wonderful distinction between the deity of Christ ( GOD) and his humanity, it shows the reality of him, being, a man, fully man. Not a man such as we with sin but without sin being a man.

This shows that he was born not created: Mt 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS. This also shows that he had human traits that were not sinful: crying, learning, obedience. I will say more about this later in the message. If he cried, if he got tired, if he was made in the likeness of sinful flesh: Ro 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

Then all of him was human, human hands, human flesh, human blood, human heart, human life, human feet, human brain, everything about him was human. Now this is not to say that he wasn’t GOD he was and is..and will always be. The difference in his flesh and ours, was he was perfect, precious, and priceless.

His hands were human but perfect, his feet was human but perfect, his life was human, but perfect, his blood was human, but perfect, he shed his perfect, sinless, precious blood to save us from our imperfect humanity and imperfect soul... He put his very life in us....

With that in mind let us move on...

“WHAT HE DONE IN THE DAYS OF HIS FLESH”

I.. “ HE OFFERED PRAYERS”..VS 7

Anyone who has taken time to study the Bible knows that Jesus Christ was a praying man. I want to site his prayers in this first point:

(1.) He prayed alone:

Mt 14:23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

(2.) He prayed with his disciples: Lu 11:1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

(3.) He prayed before his betrayal and crucifixion:

This is what our text is referring to, it was the strongest prayer he utter before the Lord. Of course he prayed in John 17, he prayed on the cross in agony, but here he prays with strong crying and supplications...

Matt 26:36-46

(1.) His emotional state: vs 36-38

(2.) His appeal to his Father: vs 39

(3.) His absolute surrender: vs 39

(4.) His perseverance in prayer: vs 42-44

(5.) His peace in prayer: vs 45-46

Notice the statement back in our text, “ In that he feared” this does not mean he feared physical death. This word fear means “reverence” he respected the will of the Father in regard to himself, and was not trying to get out of death: John 12:27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

II... “HE WAS OBEDIENT” VS 8

Every time I read this, I stand in amazement, can God learn something?, no but Jesus could as a man. Can God be obedient, no but Jesus could. Could God suffer, no but the Lord Jesus Christ could. He had to learn and be subjected to humanity or you and I would not have a saviour.

(1.) In his life he was constantly obedient to his Fathers will: Joh 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. Joh 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

(2.) In his life he never failed in keeping his Father’s will: Joh 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

(3.) In his life He sought the will of his Father: Joh 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

(3.) In his life he suffered as a man:

John Gill says: “from men, from devils, and from the justice of God. Christ’s sonship did not exempt him from obedience and sufferings; this shows the dignity of Christ’s person,” This showed him as a servant to his Father and a servant for us... He said: Mt 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

(4.) In his death he submitted to his fathers will:

Joh 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Paul said: Ga 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

III.. “ HIS ETERNAL WORK FOR US” VS 9

TWO THINGS:

(1.) That he is the author of eternal salvation:

Salvation is the very life of GOD in us. This is seen in his prayer in John 17:1-3 1 ¶ These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

The interest in eternal life is seen through out the NT there is twenty six verses that deal with this one subject:

Rich man thought there was something to do to have it: Matt 19-16

Peter said there was no one to go to for eternal life but Christ: John 6:68

Jesus Christ promised to give eternal life: John 10:28-29

Luke said some were ordained to it: Acts 13:48

That eternal life is a gift: Romans 6:23

(2.) That he gives it to those that obey him: vs 9

I have told you many times that the word “obey” means to hearken submissively. The great bible illustration I use is found in: Mt 8:27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! You know that the wind was working, when they heard the voice of Jesus they quit, that is they hearkened unto him.

Likewise in salvation, you must be called, and when you are called, just hearken to the voice that is calling you. Today is the day of salvation listen to what Paul said: : 2Co 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

Some of you have been fighting long enough, some of you have wrestled long enough, if that is real, and if that is GOD calling you fall on him today be saved. Don’t wait another day, don’t look to someone else. The Lord said: Isa 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

There is sovereingty in salavation we all know that, but there is responsibility in it also. God will hold you here this morning who are lost and walk out without Christ. Acts 16-30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Two verses and I will close: The Lord will come one day and I want you to listen to what it says about what will happen to you when he comes if you obey not the gospel...

2Th 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

1Pe 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God
