Sunday Morning

Series: Christ the Sum & Substance of The Bible

Subject: “ The Reality of Christ The Superior Judge”

Text: 2 Tim 4-1-8

sermon # 86

Intro: It does not take a theologian to understand that this passage deals with two great and most important events. It deals with the judgement that is to come, and the preaching of the gospel of Christ.

In light of the fact of Christ coming and judgement is sure, Paul charges Timothy with these most solemn truths. It is my hope in this message to set forth both of these truths with the leadership of the Holy Spirit and his power on this message.

He also shows Timothy that the eye of the LORD is upon those who take up the sword of the LORD which is the word of God. That we have an awesome responsibility to preach the whole counsel of the LORD because he is watching...

I... “ CHRIST THE JUDGE”...VS 1

Joh 5:22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: Joh 5:27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

(1.) Christ is judge by a divine appointment:

Ac 10:42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

(2.) He is judge because he is God and knows all things which makes him well qualified to judge in all matters:

Joh 2:25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

(3.) He has appointed a day when this shall occur:

Ac 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

a. It will be a day of separation: Mt 25:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

Re 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Re 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

b. It will be a day when men are judge based upon how they relate to the gospel: Ro 2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

(4.) It will a day of rewards: 1Co 3:13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.1Co 3:15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

(5.) It will be a day when he will have put down all enemies under his feet, and shall delivered the Kingdom to the Father: 1 Cor 15:23-28

In this particular text I know there are some question that arise that I cannot answer , but likewise there are some pretty clear points..

A. Christ the firstfruits from the dead: vs 23

b. We are next: vs 23

c. The end is coming: vs 24

d. When the end is coming..vs 24

e. The last enemy is death: vs 25

II... THAT HE HAD A DIVINE MANDATE BEFORE THIS JUDGE TO PREACH THE WORD: VS 2

Those of us who are preachers, remain under this same charge. We must preach his word till we die. It is our calling, it is our unction, it is our privilege. It is the divine ordain means of God to save his people. God chose the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe...

(1.) He was to be ready to preach: vs 2

The word “instant” means ready. Just like when Paul wrote to the Romans he said: Ro 1:15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

Barnes says in commentary on this verse the following and I agree:

This word does not elsewhere occur in the New Testament. It is the opposite of the former, and means that a minister is to seek opportunities to preach the gospel even at such periods as might be inconvenient to himself, or when there might be hinderances and embarrassments, or when there was no stated appointment for preaching. He is not to confine himself to the appointed times of worship, or to preach only when it will be perfectly convenient for himself; but he is to have such an interest and earnestness in the work, that it will lead him to do it in the face of embarrassments and discouragements, and whenever he can find an opportunity

(2.) He is to preach it even though men will not adhere to it: vs 3

We consider this to be present in our day as well when Paul wrote it. Sinners who believe a shallow gospel hate the truth as we know it. It is not the lost that bow up unless it is a lost church member it is the so-called saved who will not have the truth of the gospel of Christ.

A. They want endure it: It means they will not only hate it, they will vigorously despise it with all their wicked hearts. They will hate not only the truth but the one that is delivering it.

Lu 6:22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.

Joh 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 1Jo 3:13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

B. They shall turn away: vs 4

It appears to me that the religious world would rather have the sparkle of lies that the bright light of gospel of Christ. Paul said:

2 Cor 4-1-6

1. The gospel is hid..vs 3

2. Satan blinded their minds to it: vs 4

In fact the Bible not only says that Satan blinded them it says God sent them a strong delusion....

2Th 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 2Th 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

c. The results of their turning away from the truth: vs 4

A fable is an invention of false hood. It is a doctrine of their imagination which the LORD said that man’s imagination is continually... Paul said 2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

d. The duty laid out: vs 5-7

(1.) He is to watch: means to be alert at all times:

a. The Lord said watch: Mt 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

b. Watch so we want enter into temptation: Mt 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

c. It is not just a command for preachers: Mr 13:37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

d. It is to be done in prayer: Col 4:2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

(2.) He is to do it afflictions: vs 5

(3.) He is to do both the pastoral work and the evangelistic work: vs 5

The clear reason he lays out to Timothy... I am fixing to die... vs 6-7
