Series: “Christ the Sum and The Substance of The Bible”
Sermon # 79
Subject: “A Confession That Was Good In a Very Trying Time”
Text: I Tim 6-11-16 Cp John 18:29-40 & John 19-18
Intro: In this passage we have a number of things that is worth speaking of, before, we get to our subject. The Apostle Paul giving his inspired instruction to Timothy as a Pastor of a church.
(1.) That which he is to flee as a man of God...vs 10
(2.) That which he is instructed to follow..vs 11
(3.) That he is in a war...vs 12
(4.) That there is an excellent example to follow...vs 13-16
The trail of Jesus Christ was a public display of human ignorance and at the same time it was a divine manifestation of the providence of God to control what men did to him...And yet the Lord being God, could hold them responsible for what they did to Christ.
I...PILATE AND THE RELIGIOUS MOB
This confession was not only before Pilate it was before the religious mob of that day his own nations and those who represented the nation.
(1.) Pilate and the leaders...John 18:29-32
Here we have a political move on the governor, and a religious move on the part of the crowd present. They wanted to hold on to the tradition of their laws and do’s and don’t’s and get their way...
Paul is saying to Timothy when you are brought before those that are unfair, don’t believe what you are preaching, confess a good confession...and you and I have the same responsibility.
A. Pilate ask the question...vs 29
b. They give his answer..vs 30
c. He response to them..vs 31
d. The reason..vs 32
II... CHRIST AND HIS GOOD CONFESSION BEFORE PILATE...JN 18: 33- JN 19-1-18
1ST. He is careful to answer Pilate...vs 33-36
In these three verses is a wealth of information about Pilate and about the Lord Jesus Christ...
a. Pilate was not honest... vs 33
b. This is clear by Christ response to his question..vs 34
c. It is also seen in his avoiding the response of Christ..vs 35
d. It is clear in that Christ clears up the issue once and for all...vs 36
Christ does not deny that he is a King... because he truly is one. In our original text, Paul said that he was” I Tim 6-15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
Christ verifies the reality of the Kind of King he was and his Kingdom:
(1.) His possession of the kingdom... “My Kingdom”
(2.) The nature of his kingdom..verified also...”Not of this world”
(3.) That he has loyal subjects..” My servants would fight”
(4.) The stern reality of Christ:...” I was born to preach the truth”..vs 37
Pilate gives the people a choice: vs 38-40
If I gave you a choice this morning, between Christ and Barabbas in the natural you will choose Barabbas, Barabbas being a type of sin and the world... But if the Lord calls you to himself this morning you will come and gladly come.
(2nd) The great professions he did profess that were good...
A. The good profession concerning his destiny to the cross...vs 8-11
You may think in your minds as Pilate thought many years ago, that you are in control, but when in reality you are not. You may think that life is yet to be lived, and that I can do as I please and then I will change, will you? No you want.
1st. The content of his word... “ No power at all”
Ps 62:11 God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.
Pilate had no power to rule, to crucify, to release, to change what the LORD had already predestinated to happen...
(2.) The one exception... “Except it be given thee from above”
Little did Judas know, little did the crowds know, little did the Pilate know they were being controlled by the all wise, all sufficient, all knowing, all powerful, Eternal God of the world..
Pr 21:1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will. How then can he punish men for they do, easy, he is GOD. Ac 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
(3.) The fact clearly demonstrated in Pilate..vs 12
Pilate is found to trying to buck what Jesus had said to him. I will show you. I will release you, but he couldn’t. The LORD stirs up the crowd and they rail at him...Da 4:35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
B. A good profession concerning the death he was to die: vs 28-30
The great day of the atonement had come, the hour of his death was near, Jesus was groaning, he now knew he was on the way to his grave.
1st. He died to die no more...Ro 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
2nd. He died that he might deliver us: Ga 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father.
3rd. He died that he might take away our sin that we might be fully justified in his sight...
Ga 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
4th. He died that he might live again...
When Paul was preaching the gospel he said these words: 1Co 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
The angel said to the women that day: Mt 28:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. I can imagine that day when the people of God knew he was alive...that they had great joy, great fear, great reason for great hope in their hearts... He is alive...
5th. He died that he also might ascend back where he came from:
There are three verses that deal specifically with his ascension...
He preached to them:
Mr 16:19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
He blessed them: Lu 24:50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. Lu 24:51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
He is escort back: Ac 1:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
6th. He died and rose again and ascended that he may send the Holy Spirit in his name to work in his absence:
Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
a. The Spirit quickens sinners: Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
b. The Spirit teaches us: Jn 14-16
c. The Spirit reproves, convinces, convicts:
John 16-8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
