Sunday Morning

Series: Sum & Substance

Sermon # 78

Subject: “Life Changing Words Of The Lord Jesus Christ”

Text: I Tim 6-3-5

Intro: In the bible it speaks of two basic kinds of lie, (1.) Our physical life. (2.) Spiritual life. There is no question that the source of both of these come from the Lord. It is said in the creation of man these words: Ge 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

The same is true with regard to spiritual life it must come from the Lord. Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

The great contrast between the two is: (1.) Our physical being is but a short time: Jas 4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (2.) Our spiritual life if we have been granted it..forever... John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

So primarily this morning we call your attention to the great truth that is before us, the words of Christ they are life...and they are spirit. Paul instructing Timothy that if one does not hold on to the words of the LORD JESUS CHRIST, in verse 4-5 what they really was about...

If you recall our Lord was called the “word” John 1-1 ¶ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The word is “logos” which means the living word. In the first chapter of John’s gospel, we have Christ “in eternity’ vs 1 we have him in the world..vs 10 in flesh..vs 14. Our text is speaking not of his person as the word, but his speech, his preaching, his parables, etc.

I... “ HIS WORDS ARE WHOLESOME WORDS”..VS 3

The word wholesome means healthy, so we know the opposite of healthy is sick. The sick words of this religious world... the production of these words that are opposite are shown to us in verse 4-5..

(1.) They are wholesome in that they bring healing to the sick soul of man:

Once again listen to the words of the LORD JESUS CHRIST Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Even before he came into the world and into a fleshly body, note what is said about his words..Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

The woman at the well... Joh 4:29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

(2.) The wholesomeness of his words are seen in greatness of them: Joh 7:46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

The Pharisees rejected this mans words, for they answered the officers and said “ John 7:47 The answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? Let me assure you this morning that if ye have never heard the LORD JESUS’s words they are all here read them, listen to them, heed them, believe them.

(3.) The wholesomeness of his words is also seen in the power of them when he spoke:

Mt 8:8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. Matt 8-13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

The disciple went fishing...

Lu 5:5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

At the grave of his friend: John 11-40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

The blind heard him speak and saw, the deaf heard him speak was able hear for the first time, the lame heard him speak, the dead heard him speak and life came back into them. What words of our Lord had.

The song says: Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life, let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life, words of life of and beauty teach me faith and duty beautiful words wonderful words wonderful words of life ....

(4.) These wholesome words of Christ are seen in the eternality of them..

The Apostle Peter responded to a question from the Lord and made this proclamation : Joh 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Are you here this morning seeking eternal life, well it is not in me, it is not in this church, it is not in baptism, it is not in coming to church, it is in JESUS CHRIST... come to him, heed his words...

II... THE WORDS OF CHRIST ARE ALSO SOUND WORDS:

2 Tim 1:13 “ Hold fast the form of sound words which thou has heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

This speaks of our walk with Christ. The maturity of a Christian comes with the sound words of Christ. Some of the quotes from the Lord are:

Joh 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. This is one of the greatest verses in the Bible with regard to a christians walk...

(1.) If ye abide in me... That is salvation.

(2.) And my words abide in you... that is sound doctrine

(3.) Ye shall ask what ye will... that is faith

(4.) And it shall be done unto you..that is fruit.

If you have the words of Christ in you as you ought, then you will grown and glorify the LORD JESUS CHRIST...

1st. That the sound words of Christ will cause us not to be moved...

Ps 16:8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Pr 12:3 A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

The Lord Jesus in preaching his sermon said:

Matt 7-23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

2nd. The sound words of Christ will cause us to have great joy in our hearts... Jer 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

2nd. Sound words of Christ will give us protection from our self and from the sins of the flesh... Ps 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee

3rd. Sound words of Christ gives light and understanding: Ps 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

III... THE WORDS OF CHRIST ARE ABSOLUTE IN THEIR FRUITION: Mt 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Your words and mine often find themselves passing away, and in most cases we don’t even remember what we have said... not so with The Lord Jesus Christ. What he said you can count on it....

(1.) He cannot lie..Tit 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

(2.) Because he is faithful...Heb 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

Whatever, whenever, the LORD said something and whenever he hath purposed it to come to pass it will.... Let me show you what I mean... Elisha the prophet was told by the Lord these words...

2 Kings 9-10 And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her. And he opened the door, and fled.

Now let us see if this happened like the Lord said it would..the Lord said two things (1.) Dogs would eat her... (2.) She would not be buried.

2 Kings 9-33 And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot. 34 And when he was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king’s daughter. 35 And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands. 36 Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel: 37 And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel.

Let this a warning to you who are lost here this morning, oh it may or may not come to pass quickly but I assure you the words of Christ will come to pass... Joh 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Joh 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

You are here this morning by divine appointment, you have heard the words of Christ maybe many times, maybe never, I do not know. But be assured this morning they will come to pass..

The Lord Jesus said: ..Joh 8:21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
