Series: “Christ The Sum & Substance of The Bible”

Subject: “Salvation By Our Lord Jesus Christ”

Sermon # 70

Text: I Thess 5:9-11

Intro: Most people do not know that when the Bible speaks of salvation it may or may not be talking “salvation from sin”. It does have other meanings to it. It is an multi facet word. Let me show what I mean. We begin by defining the word: To save by delivering one from some trouble, sin, etc.

Moses when he had the children of Israel at the bank of the red sea, used the word salvation in the LORD delivering them from their enemy who would have slaughter them if he could...

Ex 14:13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

When Jonah was in the belly of the wail, he used the word salvation to mean that he needed saving from the belly of the wail. Jon 2:9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that, that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

But when the bible speaks of salvation in the manner of our text, it is talking about the most important, the most blessed, the most useful, the most victorious salvation there is. To be saved from what we are...” Sinners”.

I... THAT WE HAVE NOT BEEN APPOINTED TO WRATH: VS 9

It is possible that Paul is giving way to the possibility that some have been appointed to wrath. That is debatable in theology...by learn men, but does the bible suggest that, does it actually mean some were the objects of the Lord’s wrath...

Romans 9-22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, 24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

The reality....

Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Judas was told by the LORD JESUS CHRIST, these words: Mt 26:24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

I take no pleasure in this neither does the LORD, Eze 33:11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

Here we have the benevolent love of God even for the wicked, not the redemptive love of GOD, nor the unconditional love of GOD but his generosity for the wicked...the negative is wrath, and the positive is salvation...

Paul said in Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. This is not double talk, it is showing that our appointment to salvation is not based upon us, because we are no different than those whom the LORD has shown no saving grace to, but it is based upon himself...

II.. APPOINTED TO SALVATION..VS 9

1ST. Christ saves only sinners :

The appointment to be saved, is not salvation, it is a means to an end. The Lord is going to save his people from their sins, because they need to be saved. Why do we need to be saved...

Ge 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

The lost pharisees said: Mt 9:11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?

The Lord Jesus Christ said: Mt 9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Paul said: Ro 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

2nd. The person of our salvation clearly stated: “ by our Lord Jesus Christ”

(1.) He is the prophesied saviour:

Isaiah 9-6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

(2.) He is the born saviour:

Lu 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

(3.) He is the only saviour:

Ac 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

(4.) He is the exalted saviour:

Ac 5:31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

(5.) He is the saviour that appeared: 2Ti 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

Tit 3:4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,

(6.) He is the abundant saviour: Tit 3:6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

(7.) He is a righteous saviour: 2Pe 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

(8.) He is a kingly saviour :2Pe 1:11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Jude 1:25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

(9.) He is an able saviour: Heb 7-24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. 26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; 27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

(10.) He is powerful saviour: Re 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

(11.) He is a worthy saviour: Re 5:12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

(3.) The means by which he is this wonderful saviour that we have discussed: vs 10

Two particular truths stated...

A. He died for us:

Joh 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

The history of the Acts of the Apostles say that he died:

The epistles of the biblical writers say that he died:

The book of Hebrews clearly taught he died:

The book of Revelations teaches that he died:

The gospel itself declares he died: I Cor 15-1-5

b. That we might live with him: vs 10

We must be in him in order to live with him. We were chosen in him, Eph 1-4, we died in him, Paul said in Gal 2-20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

We die in him when we die physically. Re 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

Conclusion:

Learn with me these important principles ...

(1.) Bless the Lord for such great salvation...

(2.) Thank the Lord for such a great saviour...

(3.) Think on these things what if the LORD passed you by?

(4.) He did not have to save us...

Question: Is there any desire in your heart this morning to trust Christ as your saviour? If there is then trust him, and then share that with us while we pray and while we sing...our closing hymn....
