Series Christ The Sum and The Substance of The Bible”

Sermon # 64

Subject: “Christ Forgave”

Text: Col 3: 12-17

Intro: I will return to the subject of the text is just a little while, but I want to share with you some things in the verses that I have read so that we may fully comprehend what Paul is saying about the forgiveness of our sins...

(1.) The people of the text: “the elect of God” vs 12

We are at least this church believes that God chose us... he chose us to be saved, he chose us to be holy, he chose us to obey him. This great doctrine is not the cause of anyone going to hell, but just the opposite the cause of many going to heaven.

You might ask the question how do I know that I am chosen, that is easy, if you repent and trust Christ as saviour then I would say you are chosen... We are set forth in the scriptures by several names “ elect being one of them, saints being another one, believers another one, the people of God another one...

(2.) The command of the text: vs 12 -15 “ Put on” The clothing of a child of GOD is set forth in these verses..

A. Put on mercy.. Jesus said in Matt 5: 7 “ Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.

B. Kindness... Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

C. Humility: 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

          D. Meekness: Matt 5-5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

          E. Longsuffering: Which in reality is bearing with one another patience..

          F. The main dress of a christian... vs 14 “ Charity” 1 Cor 13

(3.) The duty of the text: vs 15-17

This brings me to the subject this morning “ Christ Forgave” what a powerful thought, that Christ would forgive us... Note the tense of the text... past tense...if you are saved this morning you are already forgiven of all your sins..

I.. THE CAUSE OF FORGIVENESS...

Forgiveness is note something that the LORD just walks by and says since they ask me I will forgive them... there hast to be a divine reason involved... I know that you know this but it must be preached...

1st. The death of Christ...

1 John 2:12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.

1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

The word “bare” means to lift them up as a heavy load and carry them upon his person. The bible says in John 19:17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

2nd. But judgement he bare for us:

Jesus Christ became the mercy seat in which our sins where judged in him the Bible says in Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all...

When our Lord was being judged for our sins.. Note what he says personally on the cross that day of all days...there was some things that happened that only his Father could do to him...

Matt 27: 45-51

a. Darkness for three hours: Matt 27:45 “ Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour...

B. The Son of God was separated: Matt 27: 46 “ And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice and saying... My My God why hast thou forsaken me?

C. The Son of God satisfied his Father: Matt 27: 50 Jesus when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the Ghost.... The temple veil rent in twain from top to bottom, the earth shook, and the rocks rent...

Isaiah 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

II... “ THE BLESSING OF OUR FORGIVENESS”

I know that you know it was not over when Christ died, there was yet something else to take place so that we could reap the results of this great blessing of God, and it is a blessing...

1st. That our sins are covered: Psalms 32:1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

They were covered that day on calvary with the blood of the LORD JESUS CHRIST. God our Father does not see them anymore..

2nd. They are washed away:

Rev 1-5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

There are three things about the blood of Christ besides him washing us:

(1.) We are able to commune with Christ because of his blood: 1 Corinthians 10:16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

(2.) We are made night who were afar off: Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

(3.) We are purged: Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Note that Paul says since we are saved, since our sins are covered, since we are made nigh by his blood then we are to serve him... serve him with gladness and thanksgiving in our hearts.

III.. THE DETAIL OF OUR FORGIVENESS:

1st. All sins:

Mark 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:

Acts 13-38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

2nd. That none of this possible without the climax of it:

Romans 4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Thirty seven verses in the Bible says that Christ was raised from the dead. All of these verses must be believed by faith...it is impossible to please the LORD if you have not the faith to believe that Christ died, that he was buried and that he arose from the dead, he is seated in the heavens and on the right hand of God the Father...

Let me close with these remarks about his resurrection ...

A. Death could not hold him: Acts 2-24 Whom God hath raised up having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it...

B. We have credible witnesses of it: Acts 3- 15 “ And killed the prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are all witnesses..

C. It was a fulfilling of prophecy: Acts 13-33 “ God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again, as it is also written in the second psalm, this day have I begotten thee.

D. It was a pure resurrection: Acts 13: 37 But he whom God raised saw know corruption.

E. It was a glorious resurrection: Romans 6-4 “ Therefore we are buried with him by baptism, that like as Christ was raised up by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in the newness of life.

D. It is his resurrection that gives us reason to hope: Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dewll in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your motal bodies, by the spirit that dwelleth in you.
