Sermon # 61
Subject: “The Hidden Treasurers of Christ”
Text: Col 2-1-15
Intro: The word hid is a secret, not a secret that is intended to be kept, but once someone finds the truth of this secret it should be told. This is what I have been doing for weeks now, telling you and me of the great hidden treasurers fo Christ. Mind you this morning that this treasure must be uncovered...it must be revealed... and it must become the great treasurer of your life...
Psalms 51:6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. The prophet Isaiah declared that even in his appeal with the hidden things many did not know them yet.. Isaiah 48:6 Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.
The word treasures has to do with a place in which precious things are stored, the treasure becomes a depository. So in our text today we shall by the grace of GOD show the great treasures hid in Christ. The verse clearly shows that wisdom and knowledge are the great treasures that we need...
This is what Solomon prayed for and then wrote many proverbs about, this is what James the brother of THE LORD JESUS CHRIST said: James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
The great ancient Job said: Job 12:12 With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding. Job 12:13 With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.
This wisdom and knowledge is Christ in our text... if you know him that my friends is wisdom, if you know him that my friends is knowledge...
“IT IS WISDOM AND IT IS KNOWLEDGE TO REMAIN STEADFAST IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST:...VS 5
To be steadfast in Christ what does it mean?
I.. “ IT MEANS THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED CHRIST”..VS 6
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: The word receive does not mean make a decision, it means that you are the recipient of that which has been transmitted to you. In this case it is the power of the HOLY SPIRIT making you the object of the LORD JESUS CHRIST...
A. It is like the Galilaeans:
John 4:45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
B. It is like the disciples:
John 6:21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
C. It is like the blind man:
John 9:11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.
D. It is like Lazarus
John 11:43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. John 11:44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
II... “ IT MEANS THAT YE ARE ROOTED AND ESTABLISHED IN HIM”..VS 6
The word “rooted” means “to cause to strike root, to strengthen with roots, to render firm, to fix, establish, cause a person or a thing to be thoroughly grounded”...this my friends is great wisdom and knowledge in Christ..
(1.) Ye rooted through faith:
Ephesians 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
(2.) When properly rooted you will bring fruit:
Because you see the Father must root you and if he does not listen to what Jesus said: Matthew 15:13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
Mark 4:8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.
Note that in this verse Paul declares, teaching will continue to cause one to abound and this is a life time learning experience...
(3.) The warning must be heeded: vs 8-9
III... IT MEANS THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THAT IN HIM IS ALL AND THAT WE ARE COMPLETE IN HIM: VS 9-10
Note these hidden treasurer in Christ:
(1.) That he fills up the GODHEAD:
Barnes says of this verse: "having a bodily appearance, instead of existing or appearing in a spiritual form;" and the fair sense of the phrase is, that the fairness of the Divine nature became incarnate, and was indwelling in the body of the Redeemer.
Calvin notes also: Further, when he says that the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Christ, he means simply, that God is wholly found in him, so that he who is not contented with Christ alone, desires something better and more excellent than God. The sum is this, that God has manifested himself to us fully and perfectly in Christ.
With perfection, with absolute knowledge and wisdom, with clear understanding of the Fathers will, of compassion that supersedes any and all, with mercy that is granted based upon his work at calvary...
John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
(2.) That because he is the fullness of the GODHEAD bodily we are totally and unreversably complete..vs 10
a. We have complete salvation:
b. We have complete justification:
c. We have complete sanctification:
The maniac that Jesus healed was clothed and in his right mind.. The blind man was able to see, the woman at the well was gloriously saved, the early church followers of Christ where change....
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. This change is seen in the next verses in the remainder of this text :
(1.) We see a clear spiritual work declared: vs 11
This is the work in which Paul spoke about in Romans: Romans 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
The Lord prophesied:
Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
(2.) It is demonstrated in baptism: vs 12-13
In this verse we see that it is a burial, it is an resurrection, and it is an operation..it so demonstrates our change and who changed us...
(3.) The great blessing he describes: vs 14-15
This is the same thing he wrote basically to the Ephesian church:
Eph 2- 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. 18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
Note some things he did in order to accomplish this:
1. He disarmed his enemies:
He went into the strong man’s house and bound him innumerable years and will not let him out till just before the second coming... Matthew 12:29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man‘s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
2. He did this publically:
He made a spectacle of them this was not done in secret, it was a marvelous work. He laid hold on him that is the devil publically... and all his enemies were defeated at calvary’s great work of redemption... he lost, we won..Christ is victorious...
Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. He also laid hold to the key of David also:
Revelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
3. He did it triumphantly: “over them”
The key to understanding these verses is found in those words: Luke 10-17 ¶ And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
