Series: “Christ the Sum & Substance of the Bible”

Subject: “LOOK WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DELIVERED FROM”

TEXT: COLOSSIANS 1:12-14

Intro: What a privilege it is to be delivered. When we look at the past dealings of the LORD where he delivered we learn a lot.

He delivered Adam & Eve from a state of darkness into his light: Genesis 3:21

He delivered Noah and his family: Genesis 6

He delivered Joseph from a pit to a palace: Acts 7:10 And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

He delivered Moses from a ark of bulrushes to a Kings house: Exodus 2:10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.

He delivered his people out of their troubles: Psalms 107:6 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.

He delivered Lot: 2 Peter 2:7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:

I could go on and on about the people the nations, the individuals that God blessed by delivering them, but what about us...Notice with me a number of things:

I... “THE GREAT FACT BEFORE US” VS 13

This text speaks of the LORD’S past action upon a people whom he has set his grace upon... That which he has delivered us from is the great spiritual death that we were born with... Dead in sins, trespasses, a life of separation from the LORD of life. And now we have been delivered from such a horrible state. Paul said: 2 Corinthians 1:10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us; John said: Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. The reason the second death hath no power over us, is because we have been delivered .

1 Thessalonians 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

(1.) From what he delivered us from: “The power of darkness”

The complete darkness of the soul, the darkness of this world, the spiritual wickedness in high places...

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

(2.) From the power of the devil:

Heb 2-14 ¶ Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

II... “WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DELIVERED TO”..VS 13

The kingdom of his dear Son, what a privilege we have as a church of Jesus Christ to be a member of his body the church, and then have the privilege of being in his kingdom also. His kingdom knows no boundaries, his kingdom is not of this world...his kingdom is a spiritual delight, a spiritual oasis in a dark and dreary world..

Several reasons why we have been delivered:

(1.) Because we have been redeemed: vs 14

This word redeemed means to deliver upon receipt of ramson. The Lord Jesus Christ said that he would give his life a ramson for many. Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. 1 Timothy 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

A. Announced at his birth : Luke 1:68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

b. This redemption was from the curse of the Law: Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

c. The price of redemption: I Pet 1-18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

(2.) The forgiveness of our sins: vs 14

Sometimes I believe that we hear this so often until it does not mean as much to us as it should. To have ones sins forgiven what a TRADMENDOUS blessing it is..There is but one reference to this word in the O.T. Psalms 130:4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared..

There is only one sin that has no forgiveness and the elect of God cannot commit it: Mark 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

This forgiveness is through Christ and Christ alone: Acts 13-38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:

A closer look at this truth:

1st. It is complete forgiveness:

Jer 31-33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

This was partially quoted by the Lord Jesus Christ: John 6-45 “ It is written in the prophets and they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father cometh unto me.

Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Acts 13: 39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses

2nd. The assurance of deliverance and forgiveness:

a.) We can be assured of forgiveness because the Bible says so:

b.) We can be assured of forgiveness because Christ died to forgive us:

c.) We can be assured of forgiveness because GOD for Christ sake hath said so:

Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

d.) We can be assured of forgiveness if we have truly believed on Christ to the saving of our soul..

Keep in mind we believe this morning because we have been given power to do so: John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

d.) We can be assured that we are forgiven if we have life: John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

e.) We can be assured of our forgiveness if we believe with all our heart: Acts 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

f.) We can be assured of our forgiveness if the preaching of the gospel..1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

g.) WE can be assured of forgiveness because GOD has started and will finish this great work in us: Ephesians 1:19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

Php 1-6 “ Being confident of this very thing that he that hath begun a good work in you will perform until the day of Jesus Christ:

3rd. The great benefits of being delivered and forgiven:

a.) He does not deal with the penalty of our sins: Psalms 103:10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

Psalms 32:2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

b.) He hath cast ours sins behind him: Isaiah 38:17 Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.

Psalms 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

c.) He will remember them no more: Jeremiah 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
