Series: Christ the Sum and Substance of The Bible

Subject: “ The Cross of Christ My Glory”

Text: Gal 6:12-18

Sermon # 42

Intro: One of the things that I have learned in 38 yrs of preaching is that the effective preaching of Christ availeth much. It is the source of all sermons, it is the hope of all sinners, it is the springboard to all subjects of the Bible.

It is the fountain of living water, it is the blood that cleanses us from all our sins. Preachers who do not take up for a theme JESUS CHRIST AND HIM CRUCIFIED... is missing the mark...

It is the relative subject to all matters of doctrine, practice and worship. In fact the BIBLE says that he is the First and the last, and that he is the Alpha and Omega the beginning and the ending, the first begotten from the dead and sits in his eternal glory reigning and ruling his church and his kingdom.

Paul said:

1 Cor 2-2 “ For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ and him crucified”.

I.. “ CHRIST IS MY GLORY AS HE WAS PAUL’S WITH RESPECT TO MANY FACETS OF THE LAW”...12-13

The ceremony of circumcision is over. It serve no purpose at all. Early in the church at Antioch a group of men declared the following:

Acts 15:1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. They also said:

Acts 15:5 “ But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed saying that it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses...

When this discussion proceeded it was concluded by the Church and the Apostles at Jerusalem that was not so.

Acts 15:11But we believe that through the grace of the LORD JESUS CHRIST we shall be save, even as they.

In this passage only one facet is under consideration in this text. It will not suffice a sinner to keep it. It will not bring about peace, it will not save a soul. It will not change the character of a sinner. In regeneration our nature is changed, in sanctification our nature is changing, and in time we will be like Christ by his grace.

Paul is clear on this matter: vs 13 “They don’t keep themselves... This is what Jesus taught also: Look at it with me:

Matt 23:3 “ All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works for they say and do not.

II... “THE CROSS IS MY GLORY”

1ST. We believe it to be the power of God:

1 Cor 1:18 “ For the preaching of the cross is them that perish foolishness; but uinto us which are saved it is the power of God.

2nd. We believe it to supercede baptism:

1Co 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

3rd. We believe it to be where the Father slay the enmity:

Eph 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

Phi 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

It was on the cross where Christ received great victory:

Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

(1.) It should draw our attention: Looking unto Jesus

(2.) Christ counted it joy:

(3.) Christ despised the shame:

(4.) Christ victory:

III... WE GLORY IN THE CROSS BECAUSE IT HAS MANY ENEMIES:

Phi 3:18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:

Clark said: They rather attribute justification to the Levitical sacrifices, than to the sacrificial death of Christ; and thus they are enemies to that cross, and will not suffer persecution for its sake. They please the world, and are in no danger of reproach.

It is a terrible thing to trod under foot the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ and many do it, some know it, and some don’t know it.. Listen to what Paul said in Hebrews

Heb 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

The Lord Jesus Christ talked about his enemies and how they hated him:

Joh 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

Joh 15:24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

Joh 15:25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

One of the clearest evidence of their hatred for Christ and then later their hatred for the men of GOD who preached him is seen in the court of Pilate: The viciousness of his enemies...

Matt 27:21-26

IV.. “ WE GLORY IN THE WORK OF THE CROSS BECAUSE OF THE MANY THINGS THAT FLOWS FROM CHRIST WHO DIED THERE:

1ST. We see great victory:

Gal 1:4 “ Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world according to the will of God and our Father...

2nd. We see great redemption:

Gal 4-4-5 But when the fullness of time was come, God sent forth his Son made of a woman made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because we are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying Abba Father.

3rd. We see and have great privileges:

Gal 4:7 “Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son: and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Bro Bill Lee said something I had never thought about but I agree. The prodical son when he came home experience the adoption rights by his Father: Let’s read it...

Luke 15:17-24

a. He never lost his sonship ..vs 11-12

b. He never lost the love of his Father: vs 20

The Jewish people in their households had servants and their sons were servants until they were made full grown sons. In an elaborate ceremony he was given a party, the best rob was put on him, a ring was intrusted him and so forth. This is what the Father is doing in this story.... We are the SONS OF GOD now by and through adoption.

4th. We see great liberty:

Gal 5-1 “ Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us fee, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage..

This was one of the prophesied works that Christ was to perform Listen to what he said in the book of:

Luke 4:16-22

1st. Christ went to church: vs 16

2nd. Christ participated in the service: 17

3rd. Christ revealed the scriptures to them: vs 18-19

4th. Christ proclamation to them: vs 21

Great liberty is a wonderful blessing. In Christ we enjoy this, anything outside Christ will bring you into bondage. Paul warning these Galatians as he has done through out the book....

Gal 5:7-9 Ye did run well, who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.

Lessons we have learn from this book and this sermon:

(1.) We have learned not to listen to another gospel...Gal 1-6

(2.) We have learned not to be persuaded by men: Gal 1-10

(3.) We have learned power of the indwelling Christ: Gal 2-20-21

(4.) We have learned not to be bewitched: Gal 3-1

(5.) We have learned that we are the spiritual seed of Abraham.. Gal 3-29

(6.) We have learned that we have one theme to glory in that is Christ:

(7.) We have learned that we have many blessings as the children of GOD..
