Sunday Morning

Series: “ Christ The Sum and Substance of The Bible”

Sermon # 4

Subject: “ Christ Portrayed”

Text: I Cor 5:6-7

Intro: The portral of Christ was seen in at least three if not many more main events in the Old Testament. I will try to show three of them this morning. When Christ was risen from the grave and we have used this many times he said: Luke 24:25-27 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. It is clear that Jesus used the events in OT to declare the truth about himself.

He preached out of the things Moses wrote and the things that all the prophets wrote about Christ. We have seen in the last three services the truth of this. Some of the things may be repetive yet necessary to focus on all that was said about the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

I. The provision of Christ.. Exdous 12:3

Exodus 12:3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth [day] of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of [their] fathers, a lamb for an house:

1st. The provision arose out of great need...

For any one in the house of an Isralite to survive the judgement of GOD they must have a lamb. It would not make any difference to God if they were a Jew or an Eygyption they had to have the lamb.

The lamb for a house spoke of their provision.

Sinners like the Isralites have a great need. The need for a lamb: Christ is that wonderful lamb of God. John the Baptist said twice Behold the lamb of God. Abraham saw this in type when God provided himself a lamb for a sacrifice.

a. Sinners need this lamb because they are lost in their sins and in bondage to it. Job 15:16 How much more abominable and filthy [is] man, which drinketh iniquity like water? Sinners thirst after sin like people who are thirsty thirst after water.

b. Sinners need this lamb because they are in need of a substitute: Job 9:33 Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, [that] might lay his hand upon us both.

Oh that God would enable you this morning to be able to see how much you need this daysman to stand in your place. I am sure that all that was in the house that night did not realize how great this provision was until they heard the cry. The cry that has not been heard since. If you die without Christ you will cry and you will see the great need but it will be to late.

c. Sinners need this lamb because they are in danger of spiritual death remaing on them unless they have this lamb stand in their place:

John 3:18-19 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Listen to me this morning Jesus Christ is that wonderful passover lamb. You need him today and the rest of your life.

2nd. This provision was order by divine law: Ex 12:1 “ The Lord spake unto Moses”

This was no afterthought with the LORD. Neither is Christ the passover an afterthought. Often it is said in the bible: God sent, Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 1 John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

God gave: 1 John 5:10-12 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; [and] he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

In reference to no afterthought with the Lord: Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

II.. “ THE PERFECTION”...VS 5

Exodus 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take [it] out from the sheep, or from the goats:

What is meant by without blemish: When they inspected it they would see that the lamb was full grown, without in spots, perfect as it could be. If it wasn’t it would not meet the prescribed qualification if was found with a blemish on it.

The Lord Jesus Christ meet all of the requirements as a lamb of God. This speaks of his perfection. Let the word of God testify...

1st. In the annoucement of his birth: Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

2nd. In defense of himself: John 8:46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

Page # 3

The word convinceth in the greek means “ It means to bring to light through conviction of the fault or sin of someone who is guilty of the charges” Don’t think they did not try to convince others that Christ was a sinner...

A. Of the Devil: John 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. In the footnotes of the Geneva Bible I like what they wrote about this verse at least the later part of it: "Satan will eventually set upon me with all the might he can, but he has no power over me, neither will he find any such thing in me as he thinks he will."

Poole said: And he hath nothing in me that he can justly fault, and take advantage against me, for he findeth no guilt in me to give him any advantage against me; I shall die as an innocent person, and be cut off, but not for myself,

b. Of the religious leaders:John 10:18-20 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. 19 There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings. 20 And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?

3rd. The emphactic testimony of the word of God concerning his perfection:

Pilate said: John 19:4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

Hebrews 7:26 For such an high priest became us, [who is] holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Note the four things he says about the LORD JESUS CHRIST: This is not a created holiness, it is an absolute holiness, this is not an created or reached harmlessness but likewise it is absolute, then his purity is absolute, his sanctification is likewise clearly separate from any one or anything that defile him.

Then his reward, made higher than the heavens: speaks of his absolute supremacy above everything and every body. I will speak more of this later. When he was viewed by his father, the father proclaimed in a loud and clear voice at least to us:

Matthew 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 17:5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Peter later confiremed this in his epistle: 2 Peter 1:17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Oh that you could this mornign grasp this wonderful Christ this lamb of God... I am so thankful he included me, that he saved me, that he called me to proclaim this wonderful gospel of Christ to thsi lost and dying world.

III... “ THE PASSOVER”

Exodus 12:11-13 And thus shall ye eat it; [with] your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it [is] the LORD'S passover. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I [am] the LORD. 13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye [are]: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy [you], when I smite the land of Egypt.

Here we see the pictoral of Christ for his people. This was absolute for these Isralites. If this did not occurr they would die. Just as the passover of the Isrealites provided and protected them so does Chirst provide and protect all for whom he took their sins.

1st. Just as the lamb of the passover was bloody and ugly thing to behold so was Christ our passover brought to the slaughter:

Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

To slaugheter did not man just to kill but the word comes from a root word which meant: to slaughter, slay, butcher, kill ruthlessly... this they did without any pity, without any mercy, without any kindness, and my vocabulary fails me to describe the ruthless slaughter of the passover lamb of GOD.

In the roasting of the flesh of the passover lamb, represented this horrible and this unbelievable suffering of the Lord. Phillip Henry said it was “inexpresible suffering” It need not be expressible we know Jesus died a horrible death for us...

2nd. Just as they feasted upon the passover lamb we took by believing in Christ as our saviour feast upon him.

David said: Psalm 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD [is] good: blessed [is] the man [that] trusteth in him.

Jesus said: Matthew 26:26-28 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed [it], and brake [it], and gave [it] to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave [it] to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

If you are saved this morning then you have tasted of the heavenly gift: Hebrews 6:4-5 For [it is] impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

Page # 5

1 Peter 2:3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord [is] gracious. Note one person who has been saved by his grace and through his blood, will not stand and testify that the “LORD IS GRAICOUS” it is so ovibous to us...

How have we tasted and found that the Lord is gracious:

1st. We have tasted the great mercy of the LORD to us who were lost in our sins:

Romans 15:9 And that the Gentiles might glorify God for [his] mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

2nd. We have tasted it freely without works:

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

3rd. We have tasted it in reconizing that at one time gentiles received no saving mercy from the LORD only Jews:

1 Peter 2:10 Which in time past [were] not a people, but [are] now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Not that we were not the people of God in election and Love but that it was not our time, God was dealing with his people for the most Isrealites. Now he is dealing and has been dealing primarily with gentiles.

Oh that we could grasp this morning the worth and the wonder of the passover lamb of GOD the LORD JESUS CHRIST. In the book of Revelation it is said: Revelation 5:12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

Conclusion this morning:

Do you have a desire for this great passover lamb? Is it in your heart to come to him today? Then my sinner fried cast thyself upon Christ and he will save thee to the uttermost. Hebrews 7:24-25 But this [man], because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
