Series: Christ The Sum And Substance

Sermon # 37

Subject: “ ALL THE PROMISES OF GOD ARE IN CHRIST”

TEXT: ROM 15-8 & 2 COR 1:2

Intro- It is such a thrill to read such text in the Bible and see the consummation of all the promises of the LORD finding themselves in one man the LORD JESUS CHRIST. The first text speaks of Christ “confirming the promises” the word confirm means to make sure, to make them firm.

The great prophet Daniel said that this would happen:

Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

The second text has to do with Christ making them sure and completely guaranteeing that ALL that the Father had promises will find it’s fulfillment in Christ. He is indeed the sum and the substance of all things that are and all things that shall be in the future.

What are some of the promises that we can be encouraged by this morning? I want us to look at them all though we know them it is good to hear them and think on them.

I... “ THAT IN HIM ALL THE NATIONS OF THE EARTH WOULD BE BLESSED”

This was an ancient promises that took many year to come to pass. Listen to what the Father said in the calling of Abraham:

Genesis 12:3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed... Then we see how Paul understood this wonderful truth...

Galatians 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

We read such passages that deal with the wonderful blessing of the gospel on the Gentile..Romans 9:25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. Romans 9:26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. We can see this fulfillment in the writings of John the beloved Apostle of Jesus Christ when he gets a glimpse of the many who are saved.

Revelation 7:4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

Revelation 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

If you are saved today John saw you in this numberless multitude. No wonder Pail said in him all the promises of GOD are yea and in him Amen... Let it be so. Christ has and is doing his job that he promised.

II... THE PROMISES OF A COMPLETE SATISFACTION...

The great prophet Isaiah said:

Isaiah 53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

1st The Father was satisfied with his birth because he promised it:

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

2nd. The Father was satisfied with his baptism:

Matthew 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

3rd. The Father was satisfied with his dealings with the Law:

Isaiah 42:21 The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.

4th. He was well satisfied with his work among the gentiles:

Matthew 12:18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

III... HE PROMISED ETERNAL LIFE IN CHRIST ...

John 1-4-5 “ In him was life and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not.

                                                                                                                      Page # 3

One of the great things about the gospel message it is free to all who by faith come to Christ for in him is life...The Father said:

John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Christ gives real life, abundant life, eternal life, fruitful life, a blessed life, a rewarding life, a solid life, this is no joke this is real. He gives life that cannot be forfeited... He himself said in –

John 10-28-30 I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish neither shall

any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father which gave them me is greater than all and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.

He gives us double security... and people think they can fall after they are saved. If they save themselves they can, but if they are saved by Christ they can never perish.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

III... “HE PROMISED THAT HIS SON OUR SAVIOR WOULD BE ABLE TO CHANGE SINNERS”

We see it early in his ministry when we see him at the well where he met a woman and she was totally converted to Christ through his preaching. She went back to town and said come see a man that told me all that I ever did is not this the Christ.

Once Christ went into a Synagogue to preach listen to what he read:

Luke 4-16-21

We are living proof that Christ changes sinners... he change me one day and I am so glad that he did that.

1st. He changes our nature in the new birth...

The Apostle Peter said:

Page # 4

2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

It is called in the Bible the new man....

Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Paul said in

2 Cor 5-17 “ Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature behold old things are passed away and all things become new.

2nd. He changes our position in justification

Once held by the chords of sin, once without hope guilty before the LORD, once lost and undone, once dead in our sins, once alienated away from the LORD, once children of wrath even as others...but now we are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Now we are declared not guilty, now we can have access to the thrown of grace, now we are sons of GOD, because he hath justified us and changed our position. He is has justified us freely...

3rd. He changes our character in sanctification.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 13:12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

Our character is changing in a process of sanctification. Our thoughts, our desires, our attitudes, our hopes our longings, and Christ prayed for this... John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy word, thy word is truth...

4th..He will change our bodies in glorification one day...

No question we need this body changed, it is corrupt, and it is vile, and it is damming to our souls... Christ will come one day and change it...

Page # 5

Philippians 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Philippians 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

If you are lost here this morning...you need to be changed..

(1.) Because you cannot change yourself...

a.. If you are lost you see no need for change.

B. If you are lost you see no sin in your life...

C. If you are lost you are comfortable the way you are...

That is until the LORD begins to work on you, then you begin to see, understand, fight and resist but you want win...

(2.) Because you are unsuitable before the LORD...

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

You can imagine this morning the filthiest rags in the world, and we look worse than that to GOD outside Christ...Oh how we need the righteousness of Christ. Outside him we are filthy looking to the LORD.

(3.) This is the day this is the time to trust in Christ today:

Psalms 95:8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

Hebrews 3:8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

Hebrews 3:15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

Hebrews 4:7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
