Series: Christ the Sum & Substance of the Bible

Sermon # 28

Subject: “ Wrong Conclusion About Jesus Christ”

Text: John 19: 1-16

Intro: I have preached this text many times and yet I find myself drawn to it again, because it is a spiritual bank of many great truths about the LORD. I have at two more sermons that I will preach in the gospel of John showing that Christ is indeed the sum and the substance of the Bible.

There are so many idea’s about the Lord Jesus Christ that is not correct, so many wrong conclusion about him. Herod thought him to be John the Baptist risen from the dead, but he was wrong. From his own disciples in answering a question said that many thought him to be Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.

In this text we shall several things that both Pilate and the Jews were wrong about the LORD JESUS CHRIST. Their conclusion led them to do things that would cause them to be guilty of murder, of rejecting their Messiah.

One sure thing that Pilate was right about even though he was wrong about his other conclusion about the LORD, “he found not fault in him” vs 38 of chapter 18 then again in this chapter verse 4. Be assured this morning that Jesus Christ the same yesterday and today and forever never sinned, could not sin, never thought of sinning, never wanted to sin...

No wonder Paul said Hebrews 7:26 “ For such an high priest, became us, who is holy harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens...

I.. “ THEY CONCLUDED THAT HE MADE HIMSELF THE SON OF GOD”..VS 7

Christ did not, could not, and would not make himself anything that he was not already. He is the SON OF GOD. In the Old Testament the Father claims him as his Son. Psa 2-7 “ I will declare the decree: The Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son: this day have I begotten thee.

The King who put the three Hebrew Children in the fiery furnace, said these words: Daniel 3-25 “ He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the son of God.

Both the old and the new teach that Christ did not make himself the Son of God his was and is the SON OF GOD.

1st. The Devil question his sonship: Matt 4:3 “ And the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command these stones to be made bread.

2nd. He was worshiped as the Son of God: Matt 14:33 “ Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying of a truth thou art the Son of God.

3rd. The centurion acknowledges him as the Son of God: Matt 27: 54 “ Now when the centurion and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly saying Truly this was the Son of God.

4th. Demons knew him to be who he was: Mark 3:11 “ And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him and cried saying Thou art the Son of God.

5th. Martha declares her faith in who he was: John 11:25-27 “ Jesus said unto he, I am the resurrection and the life: be that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die, Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of GOD which should come into the world.

No matter what the Jews say about him, no matter what Pilate thought of him, no matter what the leaders of the country said he will remain who he is, not the made son of GOD, not the created son of God, but the eternal Son of GOD.

Paul said he was declared to be the Son of God by the resurrection from the dead with power. You cannot be saved without acknowledging he is the Son of God. In Acts 8:37 And Philippi said, If thou believest with all thin heart, thou mayest, And he answered and said I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

II... “ PILATE THOUGHT HE HAD POWER OVER CHRIST” VS 10-11

If there was ever a wrong conclusion about his power and the power he had over the LORD JESUS CHRIST it is this. Men in their natural state believe they have power over Christ. Pilate no different. He was a powerful man but where did he get his power? It was not from his own energy, it was from CHRIST.

1st. His power to rule was given to him from above! Vs 11

Proverbs 21:1 “ The King’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

Here without question is the absolute will of God stated, it was the will of God for Christ to be crucified, and nothing nor no one could stop it, not this deceived King, nor the Jews.

2nd. His power to execute Christ was given him from above also:

This is clearly seen in the nest verse, he tried to find a way out and he could not. Look at

verse 12. This is seen in the statement, he turns the heart of the KING withersoever he wills.

Revelation 17:17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

Listen to the Old Testament:

Proverbs 16:1 The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD. Proverbs 16:9 A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps. Proverbs 20:24 Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

The three wise men were told by Herod go find the child and bring him to me that I may worship him also: Listen to what the Lord said: Matthew 2:12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

The Lord controlling the King by turning these men back toward their own country and Herod thought well I will kill all the babies two years old and down and I will get him that way.

III.. “ THE JEWS REJECTION OF HIM AS A KING WHICH WAS A WRONG CONCLUSION ON THEIR PART”..VS 13-16

To believe that there is a King other than Jesus Christ over them was a wrong conclusion as to his role and work. Many people even today think of Christ as prophet, priest but not King yet, he will be King one day. He is King now!

1st. He is the King now because he has a Kingdom:

Note that in John 18:36 “ Jesus answered, My Kingdom is not of this world, if my kingdom were of this world then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my Kingdom not from hence.

2nd. He King because he has subjects in his kingdom right now..

Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

There is no doubt that the BIBLE teaches two important things concerning the Kingdom of the Lord.

(1.) You must be born again to see it:

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

The seeing of the Kingdom of God is the perception of it. It is not some physical entity, it is not some empire of a physical nature on earth, but it is a spiritual kingdom located universally through out heaven and earth.

(2.) You must be born again before you can enter into it:

John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Once God saves a sinner then it is clear they are subjects of the King, they do the business of the King, they worship the King, they want his will to be done, In the prayer it is said that we are to pray for thy will to be done in heaven and on earth.

The kingdom of Christ can be said to be that wonderful joy and peace in the Holy Spirit of God.

3rd. He is King by divine declaration:

Psa 2-6 “ Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill Zion. Then Paul in his writings declares him to be:

1 Timothy 6:15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

I realize that in the day of his reign men do not recognize the greatest of the saviour, they think they are doing their will, but in reality they are doing his will, but there will come a day when every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is LORD to the glory of the Father.

Two verse:

Revelation 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

Revelation 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Their rejection of him is seen in these things:

(1.) We have no king: vs 15

Luke 19:14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

(2.) We see it in the acknowlegement of Caesar as their King... We have no king but Caesar..

(3.) It is seen in them taken him and crucifying him: vs 16

They took him not as their Messiah, they took him not as their prophet, they took him not as their priest, they took him not as their King, they took him not as their savior, they took him to kill him and gratify their own lust of hatred of him.

What will you do then with Jesus which is called the Christ, can you trust him to save you this morning? Can you believe that he is who he says he is? Can you renounce all others and say yes to the LORD JESUS CHRIST? If you can then do it!
