Sunday Morning
Series: Christ the sum & substance of the Bible
Sermon # 24
Subject: Some Great Truths About Jesus
Text: John 9:1-7
Intro: Just prior to this text a great number of things happened in the life of Christ and his ministry. A woman was set in the midst where Christ was teaching who was taken in the act of adultery, of course you know they could care less what the woman did, they wanted to trap the LORD.
John 8:6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down and with his finger wrote on the ground as though he heard them not.
His reply to them was simple “ He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. Which caused conviction in their hearts and they left his presence and the woman was left with Christ alone...Christ ask her woman where are thine accusers? No man Lord. Neither do I condemn thee go and sin no more.
Christ preached that he was the light of the world, and those that followed him would not walk in darkness but would have the light of life...He spoke of truth as a vehicle of freedom, and that it would set them free, and their reply we be Abraham’s seed and have been in bondage to no man... Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day and saw it.
Then he makes that wonderful truth that we love and believe to be the truth, John 8:58 and their response to him vs 59 Which brings us to our text for this morning The greatest of Christ.
I.. “ CHRIST PASSED BY: VS 1
At first glance this may not seem like much, but remember that in every case, in every scripture, in every event nothing in the Bible is unimportant. It all has a message and certainly where Jesus passed by. It was a great day when Jesus passed by. It was a time of great need.
The passing of Christ toward sinners is one of the greatest blessing that sinners could ever expect to happen to them. Let me site a few places in the word of God that Jesus passed by:
1st. He passed John the Baptist way one day:
John 1:29 “ The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him and saith, Behold the lam of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
I love what John says next “ This is he” This is he that was before me, this is he whom I am not worthy to unloose his shoe strings, this is he that must increase and I must decrease...
2nd. He passed by a wedding feast:
John 2:11 “ This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee and manifested forth his glory and his disciples believed on him.
3rd. He passed by the woman at the well:
John 4:3-4 “He left Judaea and departed again into Galilee. And he must needs go through Samaria. A woman in dire need. A sinner with no idea who she was fixing to meet.. The CHRIST of the eternal covenant of GOD.
As you know there are so many other events that I could speak of that changed the lives of many people because JESUS PASSED BY. This is true even in this service this morning, look at us, JESUS PASSED BY OUR HEARTS ONE DAY. It changed us forever...
II.. HE SAW A BLIND MAN”...VS 1
Once again we see the results of Christ passing by. He sees this blind man. The great Christ of eternity now looking at the helpless sinners as he passes their way. In the events that record his great compassion on sinners we see many that he changed.
John 1: 46-51
In this story of the blind man we can see some spiritual truths that we must look at for the Bible speaks often of the blindness of sinners.
1st. That this blindness is the result of Adam’s sin passed on to us:
Paul spoke of unbelievers walking after the vanity of their minds: Eph 4-18 “Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God though the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
2nd. That this blindness causes one not to see the light of the glorious gospel of jesus Christ..
2 Cor 4-3-4 “ But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not. Lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ who is the image of God should shine unto them.
May the Holy Spirit of God drive home truth to your blind heart, for you see it takes the LORD to triumph over your blindness and your unbelief, your coldness, your unwillingness, may he remove the scales of blindness from your spiritual eyes this Lord’s day so that you may come to Christ seeing and believing...
III... “THE GREAT WORK HE DOES ON THIS BLIND MAN” VS 2-7
1st. The question asked by his disciples: vs “ Who did sin, this man or his parents?”
It is so ingrained in humans to think the worst about those who have misfortune in life, to be sick, or to have all kinds of bad luck so to speak. It is wrong to make concluding judgements against people with clear evidence.
2nd. The answer Christ gives: vs 3 “ Neither hath”
It was in the purpose and the plan of God from all eternity that this man was to be born blind: I know that it is hard for people see GOD in this light that he would allow or create people like this:
The Lord in calling Moses proposes a rhetorical question to Moses, Moses said to the LORD, Ex 4-10 And Moses said unto the Lord O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech. The Lord answers him: Ex 4-11 “ And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? Or who maketh the dumb, or dear, or the seeing or the blind? Have not I the LORD?
3rd. The purpose of this blind man: “but that the works of God should be made manifest”
When Lazarus died note what Jesus tells his disciples: John 11:4 “ When Jesus heard that, this sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of GOD, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
When Jesus heals this paralytic man note what happened: Matt 9-8 But when the multitude saw it, they marveled and glorified God, which had given such power unto men. What they didn’t see that GOD did not give it to just any man but unto the GOD MAN Christ Jesus our Lord and Saviour...
Everything that Jesus Christ did, every miracle he performed, every good deed such as feeding the hungry, every soul he saved, manifested that he was who he said he was and GOD was glorified in him.
IV.. “ THE NECESSITY OF THIS WORK AND ALL OTHER WORKS OF CHRIST..VS 4-7
1ST. That he gives credit to the one that sent him: vs 4
John 4:34 “Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
In his priestly prayer Jesus said: John 17:4 “ I have glorified thee on earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
2nd. The work he performs: vs 5-7
a. He clear statement: I am the light of the world...
B. His unusual way of healing this man: He spat on the ground
1 Corinthians 1:28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
c. His clear instructions: vs 7
You remember the leper who wanted to be healed but didn’t want to go wash in the muddy waters of Jordan 2 Kings 5:8-14 Turn and read it with me...
Note that the King was healed, note that the blind man was healed...they both were instruments of Jesus Christ displaying his power and glory.. In conclusion this morning let me say...
1st. That without the power of God these would have been commandments of no value at all...
2nd. That with God all things are possible...
