Series: Jesus Christ the sum & substance of the bible
Sermon # 21
Subject: “fastening our eyes on christ”
Text: luke 4:16-21
Intro: In the synagogues of the jewish people there was seven men that stood up to read when they congregated together. The first one that read was “the priest” the second one was the “levite”
The remainder of the seven were men of the local jewish congregation. Mh henry asserts that since this was his home town no doubt this is where he was a member.
The reality in the text is clear, christ went to worship services, note that it is said it was his custom...vs 16. what a glorious day this was in the life of this town and the life of this synagogue, jesus was present...
I... “ his purpose stated”...vs 18-19
it was no accident that christ went to preach to the poor his great gospel message...
1st. That he was anointed to preach...vs 18
the word “anointed” means to furnish with power. Look at verse 14 the power of the spirit... no preacher can properly preach without the power of the holy spirit. Christ no exception.
later in his ministry in fact after his resurrection he told his disciples these words:
Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
We would do well to seek the power of the spirit in our preaching...Christ was a god called preacher, christ was a anointed preacher, christ was a compassionate preacher, christ was a powerful preacher...
2nd. He preached the gospel to the poor: vs 18
when john sent and inquired of jesus was he the one that was to come or do we look for another... note the words of christ to john’s disciples... “the poor have the gospel preached to them”.
In his sermon on the mount...Matt 5:3 “ blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. It should be recognized that the vast majority of the human race was poor in christ day, and that is clear even in our day.
James said:
James 2:5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
3rd. The effects of preaching the gospel to the poor in our text..vs 19
a.“Heal the brokenhearted... let it be clearly understood that christ was preaching not for their poverty of human misery, but of the spiritual misery they found themselves in when christ opened their hearts..
Psalms 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
This is the central purpose of the gospel message is to cause sinner to see their need of christ to be broken in their spirit’s to realize their poverty stricken position before the lord.
Jeremiah 8:22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
the great healing power of christ is beyond the scope of the physical, but to the root of the soul. It is by his stripes we are healed...
B. Deliverance to the captives:
it was the privilege and honor of christ to do his father’s will and to reach his people wherever they may have been, whatever condition they were in. Christ was the great deliverer..
Paul preaching to the romans said:
Romans 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
he said about his conversion:
Galatians 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
c. Sight to the blind:
no doubt christ opened blinded eyes, but I still think the emphasis is on the spiritual and not the physical. Just as a blind person needs to see, sinners are blind and their eyes must be opened.
Matthew 23:16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! Matthew 23:17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? Matthew 23:19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? Matthew 23:24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
the great hymn writer “john newton that slave traitor” I once was lost and now I am found was blind but now I see”... that my friends is the story of every sinner saved by grace this morning.
D. liberty to them that are bruised”
Barnes says in his commentary about this phrase:
The word bruised, here, evidently has the same general signification as broken- hearted or the contrite. It means those who are pressed down by great calamity, or whose hearts are pressed or bruised by the consciousness of sin. To set them at liberty is the same as to free them from this pressure, or to give them consolation.
We see this in the publican...
Jeremiah 18 ¶ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God.19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.
The publican...
Luke 18:13 “ and the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying god be merciful to me a sinner”.
This is what the preaching of the gospel to the poor does, it melts the strong in heart, it removes the calced heart. It causes sinners to cry out for mercy...
e“preaching the acceptable year of the lord”
mh says:
II... “THE EFFECTS OF HIS SERMON”...VS 20
IT DREW THEIR ATTENTION TO CHRIST...NO ONE HAD EVER READ THE WORD OF GOD LIKE THAT WITH SO MUCH POWER AND INSIGHT.. HE DECLARES .... “ TODAY IS THE SCRIPTURE FULFILLED IN YOUR EARS”
FASTENING YOUR EYES UPON CHRIST THIS MORNING!
1ST. THERE MUST BE A LOOKING AWAY FROM THAT WHICH DRAWS YOU AWAY FROM CHRIST”
YOU MUST HEED THE WARNINGS OF THE WORD OF GOD, LIKE LOT WAS TOLD BY THE ANGEL...
Genesis 19:17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
LOOK AWAY FROM YOUR FLESHLY DESIRES THIS MORNING, LOOK AWAY FROM YOUR FEARS, LOOK AWAY FROM YOUR SINS, LOOK AWAY FROM YOUR OWN WILL, LOOK AWAY FROM YOUR UNWILLINGNESS..LOOK AWAY FROM ALL THAT DRAWS YOUR FROM CHRIST THIS MORNING.
2nd. You must see no man but christ this morning:
Isaiah 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
Look to christ, for he is the only savior: acts 4-12
look to christ, for he is the only acceptance: eph 1-6
look to christ, for he is the only refuge you have: heb 6-18
look to christ, for he is the only one capable of saving you: heb 7-25
look to christ, for he is the only one who is the Arthur and finisher of faith:
heb 12:2 looking unto jesus the author and the finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the thrown of god...
Can you look this morning...
