Intro: I believe that I have given sufficient evidence not that you needed any, that Christ is indeed the Sum and the Substance of the Old Testament. I would like to just show a few point before we move totally to the gospels and the Christ of them.

In Malachi “ Christ is the messenger of the Covenant, the sun of righteousness”
So you can see readily that CHRIST IS THE SUM AND THE SUBSTANCE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT” I would like to look at Christ like this, In the old testament Christ was promised.... In the GOSPEL Christ came: III. In the espistles Christ is personified. In Revelation Christ is predominant:
Matthew begins his gospel writtings with the list of people that you can trace the lineage of Jesus Christ.... Matt 1-1-17 then he goes to the annoucement of his birth Matt 1:18-25 Then he proceeds to the events that surrounded his birth..Matt 2:1-23 Matt 3:1-17 John the Baptist begins his public ministry and baptizes the Lord Jesus Christ and the Father approves of it. Then he records the temptation of Christ in Chapter 4:1-11 which brings us to our text for this morning..
I... “ THE PRECESION OF CHRIST CONCERNING PROHECY” ..VS 12-14
I could never say enough about the LORD JESUS CHRIST ability to look at what was around him and make sure he did not violate prophecy concerning himself. This shows great knowledge of his Father’s will.
1st. In the ministry of his kingdom’s work: Matthew 8:17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare [our] sicknesses.
2nd. In regard to his personal safety so he could fulfill his mission: Matthew 12:14-17 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. 15 But when Jesus knew [it], he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; 16 And charged them that they should not make him known: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
3rd. In regard to his preaching ministry: Matthew 13:35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
4th. In regard to his revelation as King: Matthew 21:4-5 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.
5th. In regard to his arrest and trail: Matthew 26:55-56 In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. 56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
Matthew 27:35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
II...“ THE CONDITION OF HIS PEOPLE AND THE POWER HE HAS TO DELIVER THEM ”...VS 16 “ they sat in darkness”
Once again this is a quote from the Old Testament concerning the salvation of the LORD’S people. Isaiah 42:7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, [and] them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.
Darkness can be a terrible thing in a physical sense, but even greater than that it is to be in spiritual darkness. No one know they are, until and when Christ opens their eyes.
1st. Light and darkness hath no communion: 2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
Darkness no doubt represents in this text all that is unclean, unconverted, uncovered, unclear, and the condition of every sinner that is born into this world. Sinners are in darkness concerning their condition before GOD, lost and undone, Sinners are in darkness concerning their state of condemnation as long as they remain in darkness, Sinners cannot see at all... Sinners are in a state of their natural existence till Christ saves them they cannot and will not have understanding...
1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.
The Lord Jesus Christ addresses this subject of darkness and note what he says about it: Matthew 6:23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great [is] that darkness!
It is so great that sinners are lost in it, sinners have no hope in it, sinners love it: John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
When They came for Jesus listen to what he told them: Luke 22:53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
2nd. Light has sprung up: vs 16
What great hope these sinners have now. Jesus Christ the long awaited covenant Son of God has come. He is now on the thresshold of beginning his public ministry that will change lives, give hope where there was no hope. This was not just light this was great light...
Christ claims to be the light that drives out darkness: John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
3rd. The application of this great light:
This great darkness that we were in is now gone by the power of the LORD listen to a few verses that confirm this in our hearts...
(1.) Commanded by Godto be gone: 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to [give] the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
What a transformation that takes place in the heart of a sinner in whom God commands this darkness to flee, light comes in, once no knowledge of our condition, now we see plainly we need his total help.
The power of light to shine upon us so that we can behold with our eyes of faith the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. What a powerful revelation of his Father. He that hath seen me hath seen the Father also. I and my Father are one. I do always those thing that glorify my Father. If ye believe me not Jesus said it is because you have not his word in you. All these statements of Christ glorify his Father...
(2.) He delivers us from darkness: Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated [us] into the kingdom of his dear Son:
What a change, what hope he lays at our feet. What great light shinning in our hearts now as sons of God.
(3.) He calls out of it: 1 Peter 2:9 But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
This is so because: 1 John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
This is so because: 1 John 2:8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
III... “ THE GREAT PREACHING MINISTRY OF CHRIST”...VS 17
Make no mistake about Jesus Christ was a preacher. He preached many messages which was part of his public and private ministry. Christ preached to thousands or just a handful, or just to one such as Nicodemus. His messages were perfect sermons without any flaw, without any mistake for he was GOD in the flesh.
David’s prohecy of Christ as a preacher:
Psalm 40:9-10 I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest. 10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.
There are three words that define preaching in the New Testament: “evangelize” which means to declare the gospel, Luke 4:43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. In our text which means to declare as a herald: third way it is used: to carry the gospel every where and it is done in argumentive sense, which is found in Luke 9:60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
He begins his preaching ministry with a semon is a fundemental doctrine of our Christian faith...
He preached repentance:
This is what John begin his ministry with and all the spostles likewise did the same.It is the message of the gospel. Repent means to have a change of heart, this occurrs in regeneration. It is so tied to faith that you cannot separate them they are gifts of GOD wrought in the heart.
Luke 13:1-5 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
When sinners repent from their heart:
1. It signifies that a real change has taken place: “God be merciful to me a sinner”
2. It signifies that a real conversion has come: “ Repentance toward God and Faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
3. It signifies a real communion with the LORD: Luke 15:21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
4. It signifies heavens approval: Luke 15:10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
