Series: “Christ The Sum & The Substance of The Bible”
Sermon # 12
Subject: “ Jesus Christ The Royal Priest”
Text: Psalm 110:1-7
Intro: Dr James Smith said in his book on seventy five key prophecies of the Messiah that this Psalm was the pearl of the Messianic psalms. We have in previous sermons shown that Christ is King, that Christ is the prophet that was to come from the midst of his brethern. Now in this great Psalm we see a remarkable thing.
In the Old Testament the priesthood and the Kingship were to never wed, that is the two were never to come together as one. Priest were to the sons of Aaron, kings were to descend from David.
2 Chronicles 26:16-21 But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to [his] destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense. 17 And Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him fourscore priests of the LORD, [that were] valiant men: 18 And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, [It appertaineth] not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither [shall it be] for thine honour from the LORD God. 19 Then Uzziah was wroth, and [had] a censer in his hand to burn incense: and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy even rose up in his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the incense altar. 20 And Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he [was] leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out from thence; yea, himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had smitten him. 21 And Uzziah the king was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house, [being] a leper; for he was cut off from the house of the LORD: and Jotham his son [was] over the king's house, judging the people of the land.
David writing this Psalm calls Christ his master: Jesus quoted this Psalm in the N.T. when he ask What think of Christ who’s son is he? They answered him and said he is the son of David:
Matthew 22:43-44 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, 44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
In this Psalm we shall look at four main thoughts concerning our LORD and master Jesus Christ.
I... “ HIS MAJESTIC ENTHRONEMENT” VS 1
A number of things to consider under this heading:
(1.) His authority:
This authority of Christ is seen in his position, set thou on my right hand. This was a place of high honor. When the Lord Jesus said these words in his public ministry he could have been thinking of this particular promise: Luke 22:69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
This particular event did not take place until a number of things were finished by Christ when he was on earth...
a. He set down after he purged our sins: Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
b. He set down as our great high priest the true minister of the true tabernacle: Hebrews 8:1-2 Now of the things which we have spoken [this is] the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; 2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
c. He sat down after he had made one sacrifice for sins: Heb 10
d. He sat down after he had become the author and finisher of our faith: Heb 12:1-3
The idea of Christ having all enemies put under his feet was an allusion to the custom of Kings conquering their enemies and then placing the necks of the captured enemy as a symbolic token of total victory...under the appointed men by the King.
Joshua 10:24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
II... THE RULE CLEARLY POINTED OUT BY DAVID: VS 1 “UNTIL”
The reign of Christ will never be over until all his enemies have been put down, subdued, cast alive into the lake of fire. Satan is the chief enemy of Christ and he will rage and roar until he is locked up into that eternal prison of Christ with no hope of ever being let loose again neither will those who are with him. The next great enemy is Death! 1 Corinthians 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. If there is doubt that Christ is ruling now and reigning from heaven this should erase all doubt...
The finaility of the end of all unbelievers, thos ewho refuse to bow to the LORD JESUS CHRIST as Lord and master in this life will reap the eternal punishment of Christ as he cast all alive into the lake of fire:
Revelation 14:10-11 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
Two things:
(1.) The center of his reign: vs 2
It would be out of Zion, and since it is the messianic Kingdom of Christ it is the heavenly Zion we speak of, Zion being a type of the real reality of Christ’s Kingdom. Hebrews 12:22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
(2.) The means of the rule of the Lord Christ:
The rod: This is his word no doubt. On his cornation day the rod of his mouth was set in his hand as a symbol of his authority. It is my friends that sharp two edged sword that comes out his mouth.
Joh was privileged to see this rod: Revelation 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance [was] as the sun shineth in his strength.
The way Christ uses his sword is seen in the willingness of his people not only to be saved but also to serve him...verse 3
David acknowledges several things:
1st. That he has a people: “Thy people”
As King and saviour he came to save his people from their sins. Matt 1:21
2nd. The promise he sees... “They shall be willing in the day of thy power”
Once again we see the ruling power of his rod, subduing us, breaking us, freeing us so that we can be willing to be saved. We seen this is the ones that left all and forsooke all to answer the call of Christ.
The woman at the well.. John 4
The disciples who were fishermen: Matt 4:19
The woman in John 8
The woman who cried out and said if I could but touch the border of his garment: Lk 8.44
It takes the power of Christ to seek, and to save that which was lost in Adam. I pray that Christ is seeking you today and that you likewise are seeking him.
III... “ THE WONDERFUL PRIESTHOOD OF CHRIST”..VS 4
It is not the priesthood of the Church, it is the priesthood of Christ made up of all true believers in the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
