Series: “Christ The Sum & Substance of The Bible”
Sermon # 127
Subject: “THE NAME OF JESUS”
TEXT: I JOHN 3-23
Intro: On of the outstanding verses in the Bible with reference to our Lord Jesus Christ and his wonderful name is found in the OT. It is one of my favorite verses I like. Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Names have meaning, names have authority with them, names are how we know one another and names are important. Jesus told his disciples not to rejoice over having power over devils, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.
Our text shows forth the importance of the name that is above every name. You must believe on his name. Ps 72:17 His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.
I... THE NAME:
(1.) It was a predetermined name:
Mt 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
This shows the importance of his name, it was designated by his Father before he was born. It was a name with a purpose in mind. He would save his people from their sins. No doubt they needed to be save.
a. You need to be saved because you are lost:
b. You need to be saved because you cannot save yourself:
c. You need to be saved because you will die in your sins if you are not saved:
(2.) It was the only name whereby one could be saved:
Ac 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
(3.) It is a powerful name:
Ac 3:16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
Ac 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
(4.) It is the name whereby we preach to all nations:
Luke 24-46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.48 And ye are witnesses of these things.49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
(5.) It is a name that is worthy of trusting:
Matt 12-18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. 21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
(6.) It is a name that is exalted:
God said: Ps 89:27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
Php 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
II... BELIEVING ON HIS NAME:
(1.) The power to believe on his name:
John 1-11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
a. The reception of Christ: “received him” vs. 12
b. The blessing of receiving Christ: “sons of God” vs 12
c. The means of believing: vs 13
Joh 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
(2.) There was a fear among the religious about believing on him:
Joh 11:48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
(3.) There is the means of the gospel that compels sinners to believe:
Joh 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; In this prayerful statement of Christ, he already knew that there would be a multitude that would embrace his holy name. I know that you have read the poem if not I will read it to you this mroning:
Lu 7:22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
(4.) There is the release of condemnation by believing on his name:
Joh 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
To be saved is the greatest thing that could happen to you who are here lost this morning, to claim him as your saviour, to look to him, is the greatest thing you could do now... what a great time to be saved, right now.
The jailer in Acts 16 said what must I do to be saved? Paul said believed on the LORD Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Is he calling you this morning, then come to him.
Poem On Solitary Life
Here is a man
who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman.
He grew up in another village. He worked in a carpenter shop until He was
thirty.
Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher.
He never owned a
home. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He
never had a family. He never went to college. He never put His foot inside a big
city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place He was born. He never
did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials
but Himself.
While still a
young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against him. His friends
ran away. One of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He went
through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves.
While He was dying, His executioners gambled for the only piece of property He
had on earth – His coat. When He was dead, He was laid in a borrowed grave
through the pity of a friend.
Nineteen long centuries have come and gone, and today He is a centerpiece of the human race and leader of the column of progress.
I am far within
the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, all the
navys that were ever built; all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings
that
ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as
powerfully as has that ONE SOLITARY
LIFE!
