Christ The Sum & Substance of The Bible
Sermon # 12
Subject “Christ The Great Hope”
Text: “ Psalm 16:1-10 & Acts 2: 22-33
Intro: There can be no sucessful debating that would not allow that this Psalm in it’s entirety speaks of the Messiah. Not only does it speak of the messiah, but it speaks of his personal character and his work that he was to do.
This Psalm is quoted one other time by Paul: Acts 13:35 Wherefore he saith also in another [psalm], Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Many have argued that this is David speaking and it is, but David being a prophet was going far beyond himself.
“James Smith says “ The question then is this: Is Psalm 16 Messianic in primary or secondary”? He goes on to say that prophets spoke frequently and recorded first-person monologues in which they assumed the role of someone who was to appear in the future, this is what David did in this Psalm.
David has been given utterances, that outran his own life, which was realized in the resurrection of Christ from the dead. That is the great hope of all sinners who are lost and all saints who are saved here today.
In these verses we shall see the debth of which David speaks and records for his readers to be able to look into his prophecy and see what a lot of folk have never saw. JESUS CHRIST THE ETERNAL SON OF GOD LIFTED UP.
I... “ THE REQUEST OF CHRIST”..VS 1
In this request David cry’s as the Messiah for EL the mighty one to help him. In the prayers of the Lord Jesus Christ he cried out to his Father for help. We have seen that a number of times in these studies.
When the Lord was in the garden he cried out to his Father : Matthew 26:39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou [wilt]. This kind of cry was usely rendered in a time of danger. There is no way that we humans can understand the great agony of the garden seen, no more than we can understand the great agony of Calavry.
John 12:27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
Never believe that because he was God and Man both at the same time that he did not feel and have real emotions.. Two specific times I wish to point out:
(1.) When lazarus died: John 11:33-35 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. 35 Jesus wept.
(2.) Just before he was betrayed: John 13:21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
II... “THE CLEAR CONFESSION OF CHRIST”...VS 2-3
Two things about these verses are worthy of our attention...
(1.) His confession to the LORD:..vs 2
God-ward “You are my Lord” referring to his Father as his master. Not my will be done he said in the garden, I do always those things that please my Father. I came down from heaven to do the will of him that sent me, I must work the works of him that sent me. So you can see the subjection of the Son to the Father.
This is one reason that Jesus said: John 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come [again] unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
What he acknowledges in this verseL: I have no goodness beside thee: This is also why Jesus said: Luke 18:19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none [is] good, save one, [that is], God.
Jesus is instructed the young ruler to look at him as more than just one of the good teaches that he had encounter in his life. Nicodemus called Jesus a good master and Christ showed him what he needed.
(2.) The man-ward side..vs 3
Christ speaks of his people that small remnant that would be waitng for the consolation of Israel. We seen this in the Temple both of Simon and the woman who had waited for the Messiah to come. Christ pronouces his pleasure in them...
They were his delight: That is he took pleasure in them. Rightfully so because he was to bear their iniquities: The great prophet Malchi said of these saints of GOD those in whom he takes pleasure in: Malachi 3:17 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
(1.) His pleasure is seen in his love for them: John 13:1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
(2.) His delight of them is also seen in his willingness to lay down his life for them: John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
(3.) His delight of them is also seen in his willingness to suffer all kinds of discomforts for them...Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
III... “ THE CHRIST WHO COMMITTED HIMSELF TO HIS TASK”..VS 5-8
In a day when it is hard to get people committed to anything for the LORD it would behove us to understand what committment really means. In Christ and in the prophecy of this text we can readilly see the demonstration of Christ’s commitment to his Father’s will..
(1.) His cup was given to him by the LORD: vs 5
Jesus told Peter to put up his sword when they came to arrest him and these are the words which he said: John 18:11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? Believe me Christ was committed to this cup that the Father had given him to drink.
Christ was able in his prayer to gain strength and say let this cup pass if it thy will, but not as I will but thy will be done. Christ did drink this cup and all that was in it for all of us here today.
The lesson being to us this morning whatever our lot in life is take and drink it as the Father’s will for us and stay comitted to it.
(2.) He was committed to the counsel of the Father: vs 7
Luke 2:48-49 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
(3.) His comittment was also seen in his determination to do his Fathers will: vs 8
Christ sees the Father is present with him at all times and must be about his business that he sent him to do. He garded the glory of the Father in his life and wanted it in his followers life also.
The great Isaiah the Prophet said: Isaiah 50:7 For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.
Nothing would move him, nothing would change his will of purpose. I have used this verse often... Luke 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
Lesson those of us who are planted by the Father as his Son was we need not fear we shall not be moved... Psalm 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
IV... “ THE GREAT CONFIDENCE CHRIST HAD”..VS 6, AND VERSE 9-11
The goodly heritage is the saints of the LORD. David sees the greater son here not himself, not Solomon, but Christ our Lord. We are his. Isaiah 8:18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me [are] for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
Hebrews 2:13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
We are his by Divine elcetion:
We are his by Divine adoption:
We are his by Divine redemption
We are his by Divine regeneration:
Ephesians 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, His confidence extended far beyond life, it was beyond death: Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, that is the grave, thou will no allow me corruption. What confidence Christ had and it shows here in these words as well as the words that Peter quotes on the day of Pentacost.
His confidence in the Father revelation:
(1.) The path of life:
(2.) The fulness of joy:
(3.) The pleasure that exceeds death:
Christ knew all of this because he was GOD as man he learned it. Hebrews 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
I have purposedly left off a verse that now I close with this morning:
V... THE CONSEQUENCES FOR NOT RECEIVING CHRIST IN YOUR LIFE IF YOU DIE THAT WAY..VS 4
In this prophectic part of this Psalm he does not leave off those who refuse to receive him as the Messiah. Futal is the attempt of those who ignore the SON, who do kiss the SON lest he be angry with thee...
(1.) The potential he declares: vs 4
Hasten after another god:
It is the human depravity that will cause sinners to insue in their life all the gods of this world, the pleasures of the flesh, the fulfillment of it. All to know good. It will come home to haunt you who refuse to receive Christ.
(2.) The results of those who fall after other dieties: vs 4
They will look for multifplied sorrows... Jews who turned to look for another Messiah instead of JESUS CHRIST will have no sacrifice... This is seen in God refusing their sacrifices of blood... or taken their name up.. Utterly forgotten by GOD.
Paul put it this way: 1 Thessalonians 2:15-16 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: 16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.
Lest you think I mean indiviuals I know Christ had a remnant of Jews he saved and no I don’t believe that indiviual Jews can’t be saved, but they must embrace JESUS CHRIST or they will be lost forever no matter what race you or they come from.
