Sunday Morning

Series: “Christ The Sum & Substance of The Bible”

Sermon # 117

Subject: “The Day Star”

Text: II Pet 1:19

Intro: If you take the time to read this chapter you will discover how often Peter says something about the LORD JESUS CHRIST. I don’t wish to preach sermons on each verse so I will highlight them for you...

Ver 1- “ Servant & Apostle of Jesus Christ

Ver 1- “ Obtained like precious faith through Christ”

Ver 2 - “Grace is multiplied through Christ”

Ver 8- “ Fruitful in the knowledge of Jesus Christ

Ver 11- “ The everlasting kingdom of Christ”

Ver 14- “ He shows him how he would die”

Ver 16- “ He and others were eyewitness of his coming in his kingdom”

Ver- 17 “ He hears the voice of God saying this is his beloved son”

That bring us to our subject for this morning. What is meant by day star? In the lexicon it is said that it is light, bring light. It is proper to refer to Christ as the day star, because he both is light and brings light. The wise men called a star his star:

I... “ THE DARK HEARTS OF SINNERS

If you are lost, then you are in darkness, if you are in darkness, then you are a prospect for the day star to rise in your heart, if he chooses to do so. This is what Peter is talking about...

“Ye do well that ye take heed” just about if not all the places in the bible that this phrase is used, it is used as a warning to those who had the privilege of listen or seeing how GOD works.. 2Ch 19:7 Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.

Heb 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. The Apostle Paul says that your understanding is darkened and gives the reason for it: Eph 4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

It is clear in this verse that you are, ignorant, your understanding is blackened, you heart is blind. It is blind to yourself, to God, to Christ, to his word, it is blind to hell, the judgement, and all things that are asscoiated with it.

a. Darkness is not always associated with bad: Ps 18:9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.

B. Darkness is said to be a place of hiding and that is so: Ps 18:11 He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.

But not so in our text, it is a place of evil and sin, and secrets, and a lot of other stuff. Darkness seems to be a refuge for sinners they think, children are afraid of it, movies are made about it, hell is called outer darkness, where the worm dieth not.

Darkness is the shadow of death to the lost, Only the Lord can see in darkness and that they are both alike to hijm: Ps 139:12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

II... “THE SAID PURPOSE OF THIS STAR” VS 19

1st. It is said to be rising in the heart: “ day star arise in your heart”

This my sinner friend hear lost today is what CHRIST does in your hearts, he arises to give light, he arises to set you free, he arises to change you, it his right to do it when he wants to.

There are verses that speak of this: Ps 107:10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron; Isaiah the prophet speaks of it when one is in prison: Isa 42:7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Matt 4-14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, 15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; 16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

Where are you this morning? Are you in the prison house of sin, are you in chains of darkness, are you fighting the LORD today, you want win, he will. Do you want to be set free you can if he is beckoning at your heart.

It is said also in 2 Cor 4-3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

2nd. In the Bible the shining of the LORD in our hearts is not a one thing occurrence.

A. It is the Lord that lights our hearts in times of trouble: Ps 18:28 For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.

B. It is to the upright: Ps 112:4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

C. It is for the path of the just: Pr 4:18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

III... “ THE CHRIST STAR”

Mt 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

Jesus Christ is referred to as the morning star in Rev 2-28 And I will give him the morning star. Then again Christ himself calls himself the bright and morning star: Rev 22-16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Several things about this star:

1st. He brings light: Joh 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

2nd. He brings light that is incomprehensible : Joh 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

3rd. He is the true light: Joh 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

4th. He is the light that is come and men love darkness instead of him: Joh 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

5th. He was hated and still is hated: Joh 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. Joh 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

2nd. He brings guidance through light and also life : Joh 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Ac 26:23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

It is clear to me at least:

That since he is absolute pure light, that I can claim as David did, Ps 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

That since he is absolute pure light, then I can rest in him even in the darkness of this world: Joh 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

That since he is absolute pure light, then I can rest in his never changing essence of light: 1Jo 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
