Sunday Morning
Series: Jesus Christ The Sum & The Substance of the Bible
Sermon # 11
Subject:”GOD’S ANOINTED SON”
Text: Psalm 2:1-10
Intro: Last Sunday morning we seen the fact that JESUS CHRIST is indeed the KING that was promised in the Old Testament. This morning we shall look at the reign of this King and his power and dominion.
This is rightfully a Messianic Psalm. It is quoted seven times in the N.T. by the Apostles which is great indication to me that it was speaking of Christ our Lord. The first time that it is quoted is in:
Acts 4:24-28 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou [art] God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: 25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? 26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. 27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
When was preaching he quotes a portion of this Psalm declaring it had been fulfilled: Acts 13:33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
It is not needful to go to the others but if you would like them they are: Heb 1-5, Heb 5-5, Rev 2:27, Rev 12.5, Rev 19:15
Dr James Smith in his book on “WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES ABOUT THE MESSIAH” said “The Church fathers regarded the psalm as Messianic as did the Jewish expositors eve after the Jews rejected Jesus, which might tempted them to seek another interpretation.
There is no question that David was not only A King but was a prophet likewise..Acts 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
I... “ THE REVOLTING OF THE HEATHENS AGAINST THE LORD’S CHRIST” ..VS 1-3
The great question posed by David “WHY DO THE HEATHEN RAGE”? The word rage in the Hebrew means to be angry so as to plot against. Our language says basically the same thing. The raging of the heart causes action outwardly.
1st. From whom this revolt proceeds: vs 2 “The Kings of the earth”
2nd. The direction this revolt takes: vs 2 “Against the Lord’s Anointed”
Once this raging began to take place, when it could not actual be against the Lord himself it was taken out on others... Example look at what Herod did when he could not have the child Jesus brought to him to kill him:
Matthew 2:16-18 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
3rd. The intent of this revolt: “Break their bands”
What this really means, they want freedom from God and from Christ. They want no restriction on them. It is evident in that which John records: John 19:14-15 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! 15 But they cried out, Away with [him], away with [him], crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
II... “THE LORD’S REACTION TO THIS VAIN REVOLTING”...VS 4-5
Believe me this morning when I say that God has a reaction to what goes on, on this earth. He is well aware of it and due time he has the last word in everything. Look at these verses with me.
1st. The humor of God: vs 4
David’s veiw of earth is the raging of the Kings and the people, but he also sees a glemce of Heaven and what is going on up there. He sees the LORD laughing. Psalm 11:4 The LORD [is] in his holy temple, the LORD'S throne [is] in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men. The humor of God: Psalm 37:13 The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.
I like what Dr Smith says about this in his book: “He sits in heaven reigning in dignty, majesty, composure. He sits undismayed, and unaffected by all that his opponents are doing”.
2nd. He shall vex them: vs 5
a. He shall speak:
When God speaks all creation will listen, when God speaks angels bow, when God speaks men will ultimately break down. When he speaks sometimes it is in wrath, and sometimes in his mercy. Here it is wrath.
Psalm 50:16-17 But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or [that] thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? 17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.
b. He shall vex them: vs 5
The word vex has varied meanings but basically it means to disturb, alarm, terrify, hurry, be disturbed, be anxious,be afraid, be hurried, be nervous...like Adam in the garden after he sinned: Genesis 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I [was] naked; and I hid myself.
III... “THE REIGN OF CHRIST INSPITE OF THE REVOLTING OF KINGS”..VS 6-12
1st. The place of Christ reign...vs 6 “ God’s holy hill of Zion”
Literally Sion is the name of the hillin Jerusalem on which stood the sanctuary in David’s day. Later the term was used to embrace the entire city of Jerusalem. The New Testament gospel age Zion becomes to Lord’s people, his kingdom and his church.
Hebrews 12:22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
2nd. The power of the resin Christ: vs 7
This speaks of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, the exalting of him, the great day of his crowing and cornation day. When the angel rolled back the stone that before the tumb and Christ came out of the grave what a day. Acts 13:33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
What a day that was when the women went to the tumb and they heard the angels here
is what they said: Matthew 28:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
Jesus said himself: Luke 24:46-47 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
3rd. The possession of Christ: vs 8
There is no doubt in my mind that he is King and as King he has right to everything. In this verse we see two possession promised to him by the Father...
(1.) A people for his names sake: vs 8 “ The heathen for thine inheritance”
Psalm 33:12 Blessed [is] the nation whose God [is] the LORD; [and] the people [whom] he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
Paul said: Hebrews 2:13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
Rest assured this morning that Christ hath a people that he came to seek and to save. Christ hath a people in which he reigns over now and will in the future reign over forever.
These people were chosen before the foundation of the world and they were given to Christ without any merit on their own to merit this. Isaiah 8:18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me [are] for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
(2.) An inheirtance as a Son begotten of the Father: vs 8
Christ claimed this rightful rule in heaven and in earth. Matthew 28:16-18 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
God is setting the stage so to speak for that day when Christ was to be raised up, and exalted to the highest of the heavens.. And now the fullfilment of Psalm 2:8 Christ lays claim to the title of this earth and the very heavens. He is the conquer...he defeated Satan at calvary...
I quote this quite frequently but I never tire of hearing it or reading it: Revelation 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
(3.) The ruling power demonstrated by Christ: verse 9
Smith said in his comments on verse 9 “ Some have argued on the basis of verse 9 that this cannot be Christ for it is out of his character. For loyal subjects, for timely penitents he wields a golden scepter of tender grace and loving welcome, and gives full and frank forgiveness. But the owrk of Christ is both constuctive and destructive.
The rod is like a shepherds staff, a sceptre, and the iron speaks of his power. Make no mistake about Christ is ruling with a rod of iron. It may not be visible to the eye, but netherless if he would and he is not, role back the earth and the heaven we would see clearly who is controlling and what he is doing with his rod of iron.
IV... THE GRACIOUSNESS OF THE LORD IN THE MIDST OF THIS REVOLTING: VERSE 10-12
1ST. They were to be wise: vs 10
It would be to the wisdom any of any sinner here this morning who finds themselves under
influence of the gospel and the wooing of the Holy Spirit this mornign to be wise...to hearken and listen.
2nd. Serve the LORD...vs 11
Two ways: Fear and joy. How can you have both, you can, I both fear and respect the LORD and also joy in him this morning. Psalm 89:7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all [them that are] about him.
David said: Psalm 97:1 The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad [thereof]. Again “Psalm 99:1 The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth [between] the cherubims; let the earth be moved.”
3rd. Kiss the Son...vs 12
He instructively tells sinners why they need to Kiss the Son... Lest he be angry and ye perish. Then he concludes with a great benefit. A blessing to those of us who trust in him.
(1.) To known him as Lord is a blessing this morning:
Matthew 5:2-6 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, 3 Blessed [are] the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed [are] they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed [are] the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed [are] they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
