Series: Christ the Sum and substance of the Bible
Sermon # 100
Subject: “Christ the Basis of Good Things To Come”
Text: Hebrews 9-11-14
Intro: Never in all the sacrifices could they look but for the same bloody days, and the same coming all the time to the same old sacrifices that they had known since GOD instituted them. Now Paul is stressing to these comers, that a new day was here, a new hope, and a better and more perfect way had come with Christ dying and raising from the dead.
Not only for the present day, but also for future days, and for all eternity good things to come. Without the LORD JESUS CHRIST no and say with emphasis no good thing would ever come to us. He is the basis of every blessing that GOD bestows upon his people.
Moses told the children of Israel: De 6:11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
I... THAT GOD SATISFIES US WITH GOOD THINGS;
David clearly spells out to his people that the good things of God or not just physical things but more important is spiritual..
Psa 103-1-5
(1.) His good things causes praise: vs 1
(2.) His good things cause us not to forget: vs 2
(3.) His good things are: 3-5
The good things are spelled out in this book:
Heb 7:19 “ Christ hath given us a better hope
Heb 8:6 “ Christ hath given us better promises
Heb 8:6 “ Christ hath given us better covenant
Heb 10:34 “Christ has assured us a better enduring substance
Heb 11:16 “Christ has also assured us of a better country
Heb 11:35 “ Christ is going to give us a better resurrection
Heb 11:40 “ Christ has provided some better thing for us
Heb 12:24 “Christ has better blood than that of Abel
If you are to be satisfied in this world which we live in, it will have to come through these better things....
II... ‘GOOD THINGS COME THROUGH THE BETTER TABERNACLE”..VS 11
In comparison with this thought, look at chapter 10:1 It is so clear that under the old covenant it spoke of good things to come, because or the reason thereof, is seen in the later of the verse:
The better tabernacle is Christ, his perfect body..
The reason I think it to be Christ:
(1.) Because he shed his own blood in contrast to the goats and calves: vs 12
a. Made nigh by his blood: Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
B. His blood shed for many: Mt 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
C. Redemption: Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
d. His blood continually cleanses us: 1Jo 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
(2.) Because his death has purpose to it and it will be accomplished: vs 13- 14
Under the old covenant it “set apart” the comers, but could not do what the blood of Christ did once. His work actual did a work:
(1.) It purge our conscious: vs 14
a. Our conscience is a place of conviction:
Joh 8:9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
b. Our conscience is a place of offence:
Ac 24:16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
C. The conscience is the place where we know if we have been untrue:
Ro 9:1 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
d. It is the place of commending ourselves:
2Co 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
E. It that is the conscience will be good if we have a good heart:
2Co 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
(2.) It causes us to have our dead works removed and our purpose clearly stated: vs 14
“Serve the Living God”
Col 3:24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
Psa 100-2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
3 Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
All that men do in the flesh to serve the LORD is dead works, Jesus said and I want to read it to show that men do serve the LORD in dead works:
Matt 7-21 ¶ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
We serve Lord in:
(1.) In good works:
Matt 5-13 ¶ Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
There are so many scriptures on good works I just want to site them:
a. Ordain to do works: Eph 2-10
b. Godliness is professed in good works: I Tim 2-10
c. we are to be rich in good works: I Tim 6-18
d. Zealous of good works: Titus 2-14
e. Maintain good works: Titus 3-14
f. Provoke unto good works: Heb. 10-24
