Jesus Christ the Sum & Substance of The Bible

Subject: “ Christ the Able King”

Text: Psalm 45:1-17

Intro: It is clear to me that this Psalm as a whole is speaking of Christ as an able King. Some of the verses of this text suggest highly that it is more than just David or some other King Israel had.

Let me show you what I mean....

(1.) That grace is poured into his lips: vs 2

This is speaking of how Christ the great Messiah and King would speak, Luke said in his gospel “ Luke 4:22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?”

(2.) The power of the Kings mouth: vs 3-5

In the word of God, Revelation 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance [was] as the sun shineth in his strength.

(3.) That he has a thrown: vs 6

This verse is quoted in the NT and no doubt it is talking about the Lord Jesus Christ. Hebrews 1:8 But unto the Son [he saith], Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness [is] the sceptre of thy kingdom.

(4.) The character of the King: vs 7-8

(5.) The eternality of the King: vs 11

These verses and perhaps even the whole of the chapter speak of Christ the Messiah as a King. In this message let me speak of him as THE KING this morning.

I... “ JESUS CHRIST IS EXPRESSEDLY CALLED KING”

1ST. He is called King by the Father:

Psalm 2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. In the another place of the OT he is called King by the Father: Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, [though] thou be little among the thousands of Judah, [yet] out of thee shall he come forth unto me [that is] to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth [have been] from of old, from everlasting.

2nd. All true belivers own him as their King: Isaiah 33:22 For the LORD [is] our judge, the LORD [is] our lawgiver, the LORD [is] our king; he will save us. John 1:49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

Someone who objects to this because they believe that he will only be King when he comes and says he is head of the Church not King. Revelation 15:3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous [are] thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true [are] thy ways, thou King of saints.

3rd. Scritpures give him titles that Kings wear and claim:

Mind you this morning that many willnot have him as Lord and saviour, many will not have him as King and sovereign over their lives even though he is. When he comes again he will shew who is... listen to what Paul told Timothy...

1 Timothy 6:14-15 That thou keep [this] commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

15 Which in his times he shall shew, [who is] the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

II... JESUS CHRIST IS KING BY WAY OF HIS HIGH RANK AND THE VIRTUES ASCRIBED UNTO HIM:

1ST. It is seen in the government being laid upon him:

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

2nd. It is seen in his eminent elevation:

Ephesians 1:20-23 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set [him] at his own right hand in the heavenly [places],

21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

22 And hath put all [things] under his feet, and gave him [to be] the head over all [things] to the church,

23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

3rd. He is without a doubt most qualified to rule his kingdom and his people:

This is so because in him is : Colossians 2:3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Solomon no doubt was endue with wisdom and knowledge but not like Christ our King. David was but not like Christ and all kings that have set and ruled were men full of wisdom and knowledge but not like Christ.

All treasures of wisdom and knowledge were in him and are in him now and forever. Who else is qualified to rule us not one but Jesus Christ our LORD AND SAVIOUR and KING.

After he was crucified and buried and rose again he lay hold of this great title of his and annouced it to his church..

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

4th. Christ governs with justices and righteousness...

Isaiah said in his prophecy concerning the coming of the Messiah King these words Isaiah 32:1 Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.

Isaiah 11:4-5 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. 5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

5th. Christ is a rich King:

He owns it all because he created it all: Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

What is even of more significant to us as sinners is the riches of his spiritual wealth. That my friends will fill the hearts of sinners who deserve hell. We are wealthy because he is rich. He is opulent KING meaning he has plenty in his supply house.

A. He is rich in grace: John 1:16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

B. He is rich in mercy: Luke 1:46-50 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy [is] his name. 50 And his mercy [is] on them that fear him from generation to generation.

Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

C. He is rich in life and gives eternal life to his subjects: John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. John 10:28-30

d. He is rich and gives us all things to enjoy: 2 Peter 1:2-3 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that [pertain] unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

1 Timothy 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

III... “ THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IS AN LOVING AND AFFECTIONATE KING OVER HIS PEOPLE...

1ST. This is so in that nothing can remove us from his wonderful love:

Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? [shall] tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Paul goes on to answer his question:

Romans 8:37-39 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2nd. This is so in that he hath promised he would never leave us nor forsake us no matter what we do or where we are at in our life or the life to come.

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he [it is] that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Hebrews 13:5 [Let your] conversation [be] without covetousness; [and be] content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

IV... “WHAT SHOULD BE OUR RESPONSE TO THIS WONDERFUL KING THAT WE HAVE SPOKEN OF THIS MORNING?”

To the saved here!

1st. We should bow and serve him without question:

Zecharias the father of John the Baptist spoke these words: Luke 1:67-75 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, 68 Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, 69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

72 To perform the mercy [promised] to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; 73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, 74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

To the Lost:

2nd. You should surrender your all to the Lord if he is calling you to do so:

a. You should surrender because he commands you to do it: Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

b. You should surrender because there is no one else that can do for you what Jesus Christ our King can do for you.

He can save you to the uttermost: Heb 7:25

He can forgive all your sins now: Acts 13:39

He can assure your heart now this morning: Hebrews 6:19 Which [hope] we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

Listen to me this morning saint and sinners who are lost: Christ our King will never forsake us, never mislead us, never forget us, never overlook us, he willnever cancel an appointment in his book... what a great saviour and king we have this morning. Can you trust him now?
